Starting up a new Travel Team

I gotta beleive if kids want better competition then they should try out for one of the existing teams and not create a new team. There are enough teams around. We played in a tournament this year and were up 13-0 in the first half of the inning. And we aren't coached by bigtrain. The point is that games like that do no good for either team. If players can't make the last spot on existing teams then maybe rec is where they belong.

I didn't mean that in an arrogant way. JMHO

I agree with you Ice, there are plenty of good teams that are already in existence for these girls to go to. Why are these people starting up these "new travel" teams? Ive heard some people say that they want to see their kids get more playing time..Or They want to play with more of their friends.. Or the "Grass is always Greener" on the other side. Yes, these people need to stay in rec ball and have fun. The only thing they are accomplishing by starting a new team is holding a couple of talented girls back from playing wih girls of their caliber. Thus watering down the area they are coming from.

What a welcoming community this is! "We've" already created all the good teams, so play with us or don't play at all.

Yes, there are too many teams, and the unsuccessful ones will fold. But there's nothing to say that a new team started for next season can't be one of the ones that survives - maybe by developing a group of players who want to play together and wouldn't have as much success if dispersed to all different teams. And by learning from the mistakes (posted here in great numbers) made by other teams.

To me, if you have five core players, you have more than some established teams have returning in a season. If you can fill it out and field a team, go for it.

If you have five or six good core players then you might be able to do it. But Ive seen alot of people with only a couple of talented girls start new teams and take six or seven girls just so they can field a team. When these teams get pounded by other teams which Ive seen over and over again. What good does it do anybody? I would much rather play in a 1-0 or 2-1 game than be a part of a 15-0 wallop! Neither team gets anything out of those type of games.

I guess the key is they don't think they're going to get "walloped" by everyone - and they might be right. And that was my point - everyone here seems to think they already have all the teams that could possible be good - no need to add any. I think there can be room for some redistribution.

I'm also curious - with this glut of players, have some of the big organizations cut down on the number of teams they field at each age group? Where I live, that's a good part of the dilution problem.

You Know, I just asked a simple question and apparently none of you know the answer, I was told this was a place where I could get some answers not just rambling about why I want to do something or that my daughter must be a pitcher and didn't make some teams, called the Lasers or Stingrays whoever they may be. if you must know I am new here to Ohio, I came from Washington State, am retired my daughters are all grown, all played softball all got full ride scholarships to good colleges and are sucessful people in this world. I coached high school won three state championships. Had two travel ball teams in two different years that never lost a game. I have been involved in softball for over 30 years. I went to some local rec leagues as you call them and saw some girls play, I thought I might be able to help, so I thought why not put something back into this game. I never ran an organization before but I know there are some legal issues with the gov't (IRS) because you are dealing with someone elses money. All I wanted to know is how you set up the organization as a non-profit organization. So in closing all of you must know nothing about and all you want to do is talk (gossip) about players or other people and teams. So much for all the good info on this form. Maybe I should just stay retired and not try to help since all of you people know everything about softball here in Ohio.l

Search the forum for 501C (maybe through advanced search you can search for 501 (c)3 or 501 (c)(3) which is the full term, or search for non-profit). There are a number of helpful threads about developing a non-profit organization for travel ball.

Softballgrl, way to express!! As you can see by looking at other threads, topics never seem to stay on track.

At the risk of getting "bashed", I will let you know that there is indeed yet ANOTHER new team forming in the southwest region.

Reason: Eight girls (and parents) from one existing team, decided that the former team was not moving in the direction they wanted to go. So, new team name? YES Really a new team? NO

The 501 status in not hard to get, just a lot of paperwork to fill out. Get an accountant or an attorney to help. A lot out there who would be willing to do for free or very little cost. But where the cost comes in, is the fee to actually acquire the 501. It can run as much as around $1,000. That is something that you will have to decide you really want to acquire in the first year if you only plan on managing one team. Do you plan to expand, or just remain one team. The 501, lets you get monitary donations that the donor may write off on their taxes. If the parents are willing to pay for all the fees that are required in travel ball, then I would hold off until you see where you really want to go with what you are starting up. That is just my little opinion.

Now, softballgrl, if you are really wanting to give what I see as a MOUNTAIN of experience and genuine love for the game to some willing girls, PM me. We dont think that we are so much of a "stud" team that needs nothing else to succeed. We would love to hear what your intentions are and what you could offer these VERY talented girls who love the game of fast pitch.

Since the original thread had to do with starting up a new travel team, and softballgrl#11 was inquiring about starting a new organization (two different things), should softballgrl#11's original post and any replies to her post be put in a new thread?

You will soon realize that there is a great amount of info on here. Just stick around and don't get too fired up when your thread get's hijacked. It happens all of the time. There are thousands of members on here and as can happen in any conversation, the discussions can go off track. You did the right thing to refocus the discussion. Stick around a while, you'll enjoy this place.

I can see both sides of the coin in this discussion, We play strictly Rec. Ball here in Adams Co. and it has become boring along with the parents arguing and fighting. The Rec. Ball here locally is closed to other out of area Teams in which I think is stupid, So every year we play the same Towns, same Faces, same Teams and within reason we know what each team is capable year after year.
This year after our regular season a few of the area Rec. Coaches and I combined some of our players and found some Tourney's out of Adams Co. to let the girls see what it is like to go out and play ball elsewhere. Sure we got our Butts Beat! and we won a few.
But all in all, it was a "GREAT EXPERIENCE" for them and they loved it. So I guess we kinda started a semi Travel Team and hope to do more next year.

since we are talking about new teams I'll add this , SE ohio is in need of more teams ---check the ohio map that someone started where the travel teams are listed--there is nothing much going on in the athens/ironton/ SE corner. more teams would be good. MD

#11,

give us some time, we'll come around...here's some helpfull hints...

weed through the hijacks, in fact, expect them
once you get to reading, you'll see the same names that popup that tend to get others riled up, as opposed to people like me who just want to make people not be so serious..but you can normally tell the difference between good sarcasm and blatant, holier than though attitudes..

regardless, welcome and good luck, and dont play tourneys in scioto co!:p

I Started the Urbana Girls Fastpitch origination last year with one 14U team. Within 3 weeks we had a 12u team also. by March of 2008 we had 3 teams (12, 14, 16). This year we added 10U, 18U and 23U. Now we have 1-10U, 1-12U, 2-14U, 1-16U, 1-18U and 1 23U team. It has not been easy getting this started. The I.R.S. helped me get started with the 501 (c) 3 process. There has been alot of help from others helping me.

If you want it to succced, then plan on a lot of hard work and your teams struggling for the first year. If you treat the girls and parents right, they are you best advertisement.

"Build it and they will come"

I am sorry for that bad first impression Coach. ;) Please stick around. You will find plenty of great information on this forum. I bet you could sure give us all some!
Please understand it is post try-outs and ramping for new season time around Ohio! There is allot of "competitive" testosterone/hormones flying around at the moment!
One could only WISH someone of your knowledge and caliber walked onto their new travel ball team field and offered the knowledge you must have! *WOW*!
Welcome and sure hope to see you around!
(Where is the hug smiley when you need it! OK *HIGH FIVE!*) ;)

If you are starting a new travel team then you must really hate yourself. I'm kidding of course. The positives outweigh the negatives and the number one negative usually ends up being a few of the parents.

Dind Ding Ding... You aint lying ! The ONLY Negative we faced... Including Some Bad pitching outings and a few Bad innings on D (But you get over them) Its Hard to Get over Negative Parental Units ....

It Agree .. we had the same Experience this
summer. And the Girls got a lot out of it ...including a Lot of Fun together. We would be on year two minus 3 people who sat in Lawn Chairs and couldn't Shut their Traps. In the mean time the GIRLS couldn't wait for Tournament weekend Win Lose or RAIN...Open your Eyes Parents. Its Not all about YOUR kid...it not ALL About the Wins and Losses. Its All about the Experience ! And your Kids Enjoy the Experience... Negativity in the Girls come directly from the People who Drive them to and from the Park 98.8% of the Time.

I Say Choose well... Interview the Parents and Be honest about your plans and expectations. Draw up a contract if you want... But there is a Good chance you will have Fun ! Also a Good Chance someone who is too OlD to play is gonna Tick you off ! Good luck. I am Glad we did it , but Glad we are elsewhere now. This Forum was VERY Helpful last Fall in helping us get a Team off the Ground... This and some Good people at Valley X who allowed us to Pick their Brains.
