How can a varsity team be set already?

Heard a rumor, earlier in the week and was able to verify today, that a larger member of the OCC has already informed its girls who is on Varsity and who is on the JV. So my question is this:

Since practices can't start until Monday, and nothing done or not done in the off season can officially figure into who makes the team; how can you announce the members before the first practice.... :eek:unless of course you violated the OHSAA guidelines and held tryouts during the pitchers and catchers only timeframe.

Seems to me that any parent who wanted to file a protest against this might have a strong case to ask for the dismissal or disciplining of the head coach for violations....

This is just a thought.

A lot of H.S. coaches have a theory that upper classmen get the starting positions even if they are not the best players at those positions.

So...Maybe this coach has all upper classmen and that is how he or she decided.

Most High school teams are set by the talent and hustle of the players who are participating with no regard to grade, name, or popularity of the student athlete. Most High school coaches do not worry about what the parents or the kids think, They will put the best team on the field that has the best chance of winning. Most High school coaches run a good program that puts the kids first and instills in them the thereoy that hard work will payoff when talent won't work hard.:D

Maybe they have a roaster under 20 girls that signed up and decided to make everyone a varsity player.

I would think that most coaches have a good idea of who will be varsity or jv before practices or tryouts, especially in smaller schools. The coach knows who is returning and should know the incoming players. I would agree it would be difficult to say who made either if you had a huge turnout, in our school everyone will make the team and everyone pretty much knows who will be v or jv. We only have 27 girls playing.

At our school (for example), a lot of players are returning. We also had Varsity & JV teams playing all winter at Spano. We have had "open gyms" for quite some time. The coaches also know many of the ladies from their travel ball work. The coaches have been "observing", and they "know" the dads running those operations for them.

Try-outs (officially) are this coming Monday & Tuesday.

I gotta say, that I would personally be surprised if selections are based on those 2 days inside a gym, versus the past body of work demonstrated by the ladies from last season, Spano all winter, and numerous open gyms & other exposures. What I could see happening though, is a decent opportunity for a bubble player to make an impact and win somebody over ..... (possibly). Also, don't forget, you can start out on one or the other and earn your way upwards, especially underclassmen.

If a school is less organized, and has done none of these activities, and try-outs are the first real look at everyone, ... then "maybe" it will be about the "try-outs" though with everything "open" (or at least more open?) ...

Some H.S. coaches use the term "Open Gym" as a way to cloak their Softball Practices, long before the starting of Coaching and Team Instruction may begin which this year is 3-9-09. Allegedly there is a H.S. Team in my area that has already made their team cuts on 3-7-09, from what some of the players have told me. Go figure!:(

FASTPITCH! Anything else, And you're playing to SLOW!

Re: OFC'ers NO GIRLS LEFT BEHIND

I wouldn't believe a team is ever really "set" but a good h.s. coach is evaluating year round and has a strong opinion on their top 9 players or so. That said, I've NEVER finished a season with the same 9 starting from the beginning of the year.

Fastpitchblue, that seems pretty wrong, to that extent. But, I would be pretty surprised if there were not pretty strong formulations in mind by ANY coach in an advanced competitive program, that takes fastpitch seriously at their school, given the "legal" & "available" options for evaluating players over time, rather than a 2-3 days stretch inside a gym.

However, announcing publicly, or privately, and esecially without giving EVERYONE a chance to sparkle at a try-out, seems "not right".

I'd say that most HS coaches have a good idea of whom their starting nine are well before the season starts, but announcing a varsity team and the JV team before the official start date sounds a little like thumbing your nose at the OHSAA. A smart coach would have waited at least until Monday night to announce his/her decisions.

That would be so nice if that were the rule and not the exception

Telling students who will be on varsity and who will be on JV, all though IMO is not the best thing to do as coach, is not in violation of OHSA rules. Probably because players can move up or down all season long so just cause a coach says you are Varsity today does not mean you are always there.. However, making cuts early is a violation. There is a must allow everyone to try out period of 5 days before cuts can be made, so if a coach has told a girl that she has already been cut, then that could be a violation.. Note that I said could be?? As I am new to some of these rules and this is how I have been advised that they are applied!! ( feel free to correct me if I have posted something in error)

I believe that the school being referred to has about 20-22 players. They did not have unofficial practices during open gym because many of the players did not attend open gyms--at least not until close to pitchers/catchers practices.

I'd say it would be pretty narrow minded to have this mindset considering you havent even seen the incoming class. Granted, you have a idea about the majority of returning players and what they can do, but what about the new incoming phenom freshman youve never seen? I think this would give the appearance of, why bother even attending tryouts if you already know you dont have a chance.

If your a varsity coach you know about the phenoms in 6th grade......and you already know which talent is coming to you from 8th grade.
