at the tourney we attended last weekend.

total games 153
2 umpires per game @ $30 per umpire (an umpire told me what they made per game)
total for umpires $9,180

entry fee for 70 teams $375 (I think)
$26,250
entree fee $10 weekend pass
70 teams
12 girls per team
2 parents per child
1680 adults x $10 admission
$16,800

$43,050 rough estimate with entry fee and admission fee

T-shirts $19 each or 8 or more $16 each

lets say each team buys 10 that is $160 per team
$11,200 for t-shirts rough estimate

$54,250 taken in with entry fee, admission and t-shirts

then we throw in concessions where a hamburger cost you $2.50 (please)

I bet this tournament took in over $65,000 last weekend

payout
$9,180 umpires
t-shirts
trophies
field maintenance

I would guess they paid out no more than $20,000 which means the tournament made
over $45,000

My numbers could be off a little and I may not know all the expenses but I have to believe that I am close to what expenses are. If this happens to be your tourney and you want to correct me please enlighten me.

GUESS MY POINT IS WHY CAN'T TD RUN A GOOD TOURNEY , MAKE SOME MONEY AND GIVE FAMILIES A GOOD BARGAIN

t-shirts you make 10 0/0
Concessions usually go to park
Some parks supply maint. which you pay for.
ASA gets $25 per team
NSA I think $40
Pony $250 per age group
Misc costs ???????????????

Remember; It's not a crime to make money. It's what businesses do every day. It's what tournaments do every weekend.

I have no problem with Tournament Fees as long as there's no misrepresentation, and the customer gets what they paid for.

Less teams less $$$$$$$$$
We ran one in Spring and didn't make a penny after field dry and such
But we did get two teams in at no cost so I guess you could say we made $700
But it was small tournement 11 teams
Actually cost me $200 out of our pocket.

I was involved with a tourney for several years and the simple math is you make at best 33% probably 20% on average. Which I am not complaining about but way more goes into it than just what is seen on the surface. Have bad weather and you may lose money with returning of fees and field material.

But everything looks good to those who have never put on a tournament. If it was that easy everyone would do it.

You are missing a few things.

umps in central ohio are $37 each. scheduler $200

diamonds 1000 a day for 8 diamonds at Pic Central and North

Porta johns with saturday cleaning $275 each four at Central, 8 at north,

balls $600 - (you would think we would have a ton left over at the end of the weekend but some how 80% of them dissapper)

$25 per team for asa eastern Q $40 per team for ASA Q. Bid for ASA Q tourney $1100 per age group (last year we did 16 and 18)

Chalk, field dry last year... $2200

Event insurance $500

there are other things I can't think of.

I understand that people run tournament to make money as a fundraiser or something like that but with the economy like it is and gas prices rising which in turn will increase the price of about everything else why not make it easy on a family

I have never run a tournament but it is my impression that the reason to hold the tournament as a fundraiser is to make it easier for the families of the players on the teams that sponsor the tourney. That way they can continue to play ball and maybe their fees are not as high individually. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

There is money to be made in holding a tournament. That is why you see more for profit organizations trying to run them. Think Triple Crown Sports etc. It is at the larger tournaments where there is money to be made, with higher entry fees, sponsors, vendors etc. I have been in organizations that put on tournaments for fundraisers, and if weather cooperated we could make some money. When you consider all the man/woman hours that were put in to work fields, clean-up, accept entries, arrange umpires, work concessions, get supplies (frankly the list seems endless) the amount you make per hour is not great. Throw in rain and diamond dry, and at the end of the day on Sunday, you look at each other and say why the **** did we do this?

I looked at doing a 12-20 team tournament a few years ago, and it looked like we could have realistically raised $5-6000, depending on number of teams. We would have used volunteers obviously for concessions & fields, park/fields were free.

What I also know from business though, is that real life seldom mimics the ProForma. Always hidden & forgotten costs & risks. Bigger the tournament, the bigger the rewards (and risks .... RAIN!!).

Would like to do one some day though! That first one is probably scary though .... details, schedules, special requests, umpires, field crew, concessions, injuries (ice!), .... DETAILS .... and, what if we have a party and nobody comes, lol???

These are fundraisers for the teams holding them. The great thing about it is...if you don't like the way it's run or you feel you have been charged too much...then don't go!! You complain about the economy but guess what...the economy is bad for all. If people perceive a tournament is abad deal for the money they will NOT attend the following year. We've been to one this year I'd never want to go back to again. There's no shame in teams turning a profit for running these tournaments....heck buckeye...you act like they held a gun to your head.
