TD's posting rules and then changing them

How often do TDs change rules at the last minute?

This weekend we went to an ASA tournament that had for the past 3 years allowed 2 EPs. The rules posted on their website and sent to us when we sent our check in clearly stated that for this tournament 2 EPs were allowed as an exception to ASA rules. We signed up for this tournament rather than an NSA tournament simply because they posted these rules. Earlier in the week when the schedule was posted the rules continued to show that 2 EPs were allowed. When we arrived at the fields on the weekend they provided a new set of rules that said a DP/Flex could be used but not the two EPs. We were shocked and asked why they changed it; they said that they changed it today and that was their right; we shouldn't complain because that is normal ASA practice (which we know). We told the TD that we signed up based on this and the fact that they had allowed this the last 3 years; they told us if we didn't like it we could leave. Eventually they allowed one EP for pool play but I still think this was pretty bush league; I am thankful that I didn't sign up for their second tournament in two weeks.

I wonder how prevalent this is, becuase if it happens often I may avoid these situations nexxt year.

Any thoughts

Did that happen at the Willoughby College Showcase Tournament?

We told the TD that we signed up based on this

This is the only reason you signed up for this tournament ?

Off the top of my head, that doesnt even make my top 5 reasons to attend a tournament. Am i missing something important ?

Was the Willoughby Tournament an ASA Eastern Qualifier?

If so, then there could be NO modifications to the ASA rules.

ab,

Post the name of the tournament AND fill out the tournament rating on OFC. This forum exist to provide info for others in the future. That sounds a little bush to post one thing and say another when you arrive at the tournament. Warn others with the NAME of the tournament.

That's a GREAT idea

We specifically asked that question and they said it was not an ASA Eastern Qualifier.

It was the WIlloughby Starzz College Showcase. It looks like they did reflect the change on the website for their tournament next week (it was changed last weekend). That does not do any good for the people who already signed up, however.

It depends what your goal is for the team. Our team tries to develop all of our players and since they all show up we prefer to play in tournaments where all 11 can bat. We are not concerned with national berths. We played in this tournament for 3 years (they always allowed 2 EPs and when they posted the entry information they had the same rules) and like the location, mix of teams, and the fact that athere was no gate fees. However, the MC Madness NSA tournament was that same weekend and had some very good teams in it. If we had known WIlloughby was going to change the rules we would have gone there instead so we could bat all 11 girls.

I completely understand.......and also love the philosophy....

Why would any tournament care about using 2 EP. There is no advantage to the team using them. Actually its usually a diaadvantage. Most teams we play over the season don't care if we use 2 EP.

Congrats for wanting tournaments that allow the 2 EP's. If it is about the girls then it IS something important. If not then, I don't know, maybe it's just a business. You have the right spirit. The TD saying if you don't like it then leave really galls me. I would take them to small claims and try to get some money back along with making a good point. Best to ya.

That is what it really is about. The girls that have played with us the last four years using this philosophy have all improved. Thanks for the good thoughts

That is another thing we pointed out to the TD when he said "we have already played a game after posting these rules." The team batting everyone is really at a disadvantage compared to the team only batting 9 and any team can only bat 9.
