2010 Compuware tourney

I suspect that the Lasers Gold tourney will quickly become the place to be that weekend.

They (Compuware) have dug their own grave, now were just kicking dirt on them. The college coaches will follow the talent, in talking with the TD at Lasers Gold, sounds like the talent will be there - including Doug...

better to get rejected than go up there and clean house with easy wins. The depth of good teams did'nt seem to be at 14u last year (not that there were not a few really good teams) but it's time for the buckeye state to quit even mentioning compuware ---let it just wither away. MD

doubt it will wither away -- its most visible tournament in ohio/indiana/michigan region

IF , big If, Ohio will stop sending them our middle of the road teams and rejecting our best then it will be interesting to see how long that "high profile" status stays up there. The Lasers, Buckeye Heat's , Doom , Ohio Ice, etc etc need to stop applying en masse , that would put a huge dent in the success of this tourney.

Hopefully an "all age group" protest by the big boys would cause compuware to get their heads out of their backsides. MD

It's a shame that teams don't get accepted and it happens every year but this tournament is still very important at the older ages.
I think they attempt to draw from the whole region which means there only will be a certain number in from Ohio.
I think they just don't select the right ones at times like Dougs Doomers this year.

? ----do they tend to "get it right" at the 16-18u age groups ? the 12 and 14u groups are the ones getting short changed. MD

I don't really have a horse in this race ( other than being a part of the Doom Organization ) and this not only effects the Doom Org. as well as other top Organizations in Ohio, but shouldn't most of the top 18u's be committed by then and I would think that the colleges would be concentrating on 16u & 14u to get a jump on the recruiting.

which team would you like them to take on ? I heard they played some tight ones last year but that EMR team moved up to 16u while the doom is still 14u . So different age groups. The doom folks I talked to really spoke highly of the ace of that staff. games were always like 2-1 or 1-0. MD

I agree Bink. And Mike hit right on the head. Dead on it. Mark my word.. you think these college coaches don't talk to each other? I see other teams from other states (previous Compuware teams)... finding a place elsewhere to play when the college coaches are just from Michigan. Am I wrong ?

Has anyone done any research and see who was in last year and who is not this year. I'd research two years back and invite them to Ohio myself if I was a TD... Drag those teams to Ohio and see where the college coaches go.

Ohio:

Lasers North (Marion)
Stingrays (Columbus)
GAPPS (Columbus)
Best of the Best ()
Lasers South (Goshen)

Savannah Shootout will be in it's 2nd year. Connected with a TD down that way that runs college showcases in the Winter in 6 states. Let me use his database the other day.

OK, so I sense a fair degree of consensus that Compuware is discriminating against the best Ohio teams. But I only have one coach who has PMed me to sign on to the email to college coaches.

You'll get a chance to review the email to decide whether to finally sign on before it goes out.

I REALLY think we have to get the facts out to the college coaches that they are not seeing the proven teams at the younger ages. I don't know enough about who is or is not going at 18U, but I agree with a previous post that 18U is in some ways a moot issue for the college coaches.

I am not sure what criteria they are using but we had a "friendly" with the Compuware team and beat them rather soundly. We received our confirmation the next week. I agree that some very good team are left out but not all of them. The only reason we go is for the coaches. It is still very good for getting seen by colleges.

Coaches are looking at the 16u's. 14u's are a little early for a college scout I'd think.

Anyone that has "IT" wants and needs to be seen by colleges at 14,15 or even earlier. The days of 16u scouting have been gone for several years. The truly competetive programs are scouting 8th graders. Time we stop living in the past......

Maybe our top(2-3) Ohio 14us should be entering Compuware for 16u competition, as the Slammers have done, playing up at Compuware regularly. I believe that selling that you have 14u talent that college coaches want to see IS the challenge. Bill has been the master at marketing his team/Players), so they always welcomed him as Big Ten, MAC, and other Coaching contingencies made it clear they WANTED to see them there.

So, maybe our Ohio ELITE Orgs/Coaches can work on how to make those relationships(ie: send emails, attend camps, Visits official or unofficial to bring studds/scholars to prove you have STUDENT/ATHLETE talent they want to see at these venues, and at that point it's no longer the TDs decision.

Bill(Bigtrain...), Think you could make a decent buck training teams/coaches how to engage college coaches and get them interested in their teams. TDs would then have much of their selection process given to them opposed to stabbing in the dark.

Good points, although the air is relatively rare up there where the college coach has set his/her entering classes so far in advance that scouting 16U is off the agenda.

Anyway, I still prefer the idea of developing the Lasers Gold Invitational into the tournament where Ohio college coaches tell the TD who they want to see and where the TD selects the remaining teams based on merit. That would produce the greatest good for the most numbers of Ohio players seeking to play at some collegiate level. And I can't help but think that other college coaches will soon tire of watching the teams/individuals they scout play some relatively weaker Ohio teams.

Fact is, few travel team coaches have the connections, time, and money that Bill has to market their teams. Ted and I, for example, spend virtually all of our disposable income on softball items such as the NFCA College Courses (where we do get to be up close and personal with some very well known college coaches) and travel expenses (though we are lucky that the organization pays for our room, there is still the travel and the meals). And we do send emails to college coaches and to other individuals who have better contacts with college coaches. We just don't have the time or money, given our day jobs, to come close to the job that Bill does training and marketing his athletes. So we're more interested in our players being recruited by colleges that may not be high profile softball schools but that can offer softball money to help the girls attain a good college education. Phrased differently, we are looking for a wider array of college opportunities for a greater number of girls. And I think the Lasers Gold Invitational can meet that need fairly quickly, which in turn might lead to the high profile coaches eventually coming to the Lasers Gold event.

Pat, I Agree. Let's GO LASER GOLD SHOWCASE..... The scenario I spoke to is the EXCEPTION for Teams/Kids that are in that SPECIAL situation like Slammers have been for years and now Lasers 94, Wolfpack, Nigthmare.... and others trying to join those ranks, IF their DDs are looking to attend MAJOR colleges for that particular SCHOOL/PROGRAM it is NEVER too early as the competition is fierce.

I think you have me confused with another OFCer. But I'm glad we agree on the substance. :D

You could always get your passport and take a little ride up to Toronto for the Mississauga Partners USFA World Series Qualifier and Showcase tournament in June. We had 26 colleges represented last year many from D1. Several girls received scholarships and verbals. Not sure when the 2010 tournament is going to be held but you can keep an eye on this website.

"The days of 16u scouting have been gone for several years"

Not sure who you've been talking to, but this is 100% wrong! 16U is where the majority of college coaches/recruiting coordinators are scouting at. Ask anyone who was in Owensboro, KY in 2008 or Sioux Falls, SD in 2009 and they will echo my sentiments. Now if you are playing local showcases (GAPSS, Compuware, Stingrays and Best of Best) and are a 14U team and want the exsposure, then you need to play up at 16U to max it out.
