Opens spots on Varsity

I heard a new head coach who was inquiring about last year's JV team from the JV coach. The varsity coach said that he only had two spots available since two seniors graduated.
Am I too stupid to think that there should be 11-12 spots open on varsity instead of automatcally granted last year's varsity players a varsity spot??

To me your right on the money........ a younger kid comes up and shows a deeper drive for a position...... if their skills are equal. the younger one is the one i want....... there is an entitlement mentality among upper classmen in high school....... the game should always be played with the best 9.......... but I guess if you charge familes damn near as much as travel ball......... your gonna get hammerd about playing time and selection.

i think every season is a new start. what if you have a player that really dedicates herself to work really hard in the summer (summerball, different clinics) makes a total turn around and she plays the same spot a varsity player played last year and is coming back the better player gets my vote every time.

i Agree, no postitions should ever be automatic, it gives the girls the idea they dont need to improve from last year because they are on the team.

Varsity is the place where the best 9 should be on the field. JV is developmental. Age and grade does not mean that you are automatically in the best 9

Freshman and JV teams are for development, Varsity is about winning. You bring your best players to the Varsity team regardless of what year they are.

Funny thread as to what should be and what is........lol......have seen it from just about every HS I know of........only thing really that displaces an upperclassman is injury or graduation....rare do you see true competiveness cause them to lose their spot from the previous year.

Just a thought. But maybe all the new coach meant was he graduated 2 players, and was getting the JV coaches opinion on his team. Not all coaches have an evil plan, there are a few out there that want to win LOL

Oh and I agree the best 9 should be on varsity, the other 3 or 4 should be specialty players, a. Rabbit, #2 pitcher etc.

Rather than an evil plan I think the problem is most hs coaches have not seen the girls play that much outside of the high school season. The season is so short there is not much chance for someone not playing or on jv to show they are better than someone else. So the coach continues to go with how they ranked the players initially because they have not seen any evidence to the contrary. So they think they are putting out the best 9 players even though someone who has seen the girls play a lot in the summer will have a different opinion.

I agree with you 100%

Our varsity coach stopped in to watch an indoor matchup between our "JV" (12 freshman + 2 sophamores) and varsity(everyone else), the varsity parents and players were all over him the entire time. Our varsity is playing in what amounts to a JV league.
7 freshman travel players carry the "JV" team, hopefully they are recognized for their abilities but none of the parents or players are holding their breath. Because of the # of incoming freshmen there is talk of doing a freshman team, a team that would need the travel players in order to have the #'s to have a team, even though they wouldn't have a schedule to play:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:
If they keep the freshmen down they will continue to have a mediocre varsity team in a weak conference. If they do a freshman team I will not "pay to play" for a terrible experience, my money would be much better spent on clinics and private lessons.
On top of everything else, a weak indoor league is basically being considered our open gym????. No gym time, no push for weight training or conditioning. The only girls working are the ones that have practices and conditioning with their travel teams.
This is my longest post ever, obviously they anxiety is building up as we get closer to HS time:D

New coach coming in. I think it's only natural to ask what the situation was/is for a place to start. Once the new coach meets the team and observes players abilities, all bets are off, and each player needs to work for their position.
The idea that players are somehow different in the Summer than they are when they play H.S. doesn't really wash, and at least in the NLL, most of the coaches coach travel ball so they're not exactly ignorant of the girls abilities.

Flatline,...Before you flatline, relax, don't let the anxiety build up. H.S. ball can be Great! It's not always perfect at all schools, or for that fact, maybe any school. Get control of your daughters expectations and emotions, and strive to work within and better your school's system. H.S. only last 4 short years for you're daughter,(not the parents), so find a way to make it special for your daughter.
If we as parents only look for flaws, we'll only find flaws, and we'll unwittingly poison our daughters with all the negative we perceive to be there.

Thunder Road:

You make some great points about making the HS experience as much fun as possible for the DD's, but if you have ever seen a freshman game, you'd know how far from fun such a game is for a travel ball player. I never had to see DD play in one of these modified fast pitch games because the HS varsity needed her to pitch her freshman year, but I felt so sorry for her travel ball teammates who were stuck on a freshman team so that "the numbers could work". I saw some of those freshman games and it really was a waste of the TB players' time (actually, "detrimental to their play" is probably more accurate). And finding someone to coach a freshman team is usually very difficult, so the coaching ability is likely to be marginal. Going back to that same year I described above, the travel ball players actually had to teach the rules to their coach, who in indoor conditioning asked why the pitchers would sometimes throw such slow pitches when they clearly could throw a lot harder.

So if it comes down to playing on a freshman team, I'd have to err on flatline's side unless my DD REALLY wanted the social experience of playing on a high school team her freshman year.

Keep 1 thing in mind with so many coaches, the general rule is if a freshman will not start on varsity they will be better off playing on the JV or freshman team to keep them playing.
When the t-ment gets ready to get started coaches will pull the best players to the top.
I would prefer to give freshman game time experience of high school ball then sit on the bench as a 10 or 11 player, who will only play if the team is way up or down.
2nd thing is many freshman cant except practicing 5-6 days a week, 2-3 hrs everyday.
Most kids would rather play somewhere than sit on the bench

we have no idea how lucky some us are, to be able to give the kids a chance, couple of years ago city school came to play at spano, they didn't have enough gloves or equipment to go around. our girls went out of their way to help and give them pointers, it was not done in a putdown way.. my niece said they reminded her of her first effort and made her appreciate all the time and oppertunites her parents had given her..she made varsity her freshman year and held her own. they won state her very first year on team..
