Seems to be a big difference at our high school on how much work the girls put in during the winter. What is the norm or typical for a high school players work outs in a typical week. I know my daughter has pitching practice 3 times. Hits 2 to 3 times a week has practice with her tourni team and plays in a winter ball league. Would this be average, to much or not enough?

That is what my dd does and I have 3 girls in my entire high school , Varisty and JV included that are playing softball like your dd. The rest, won't pick up a bat and ball till they are forced to come to the first day of softball practice.

I would toss out winter league, as I don't really understand what value one gets from it but see loads of risk. (injury, fatigue, poor competition, often less then knowledgeable coaches, ....)

DD is doing conditioning 2x a week for school, batting practice with her travel coach on Mondays, indoor game (if thats what you call it) on sundays (and i am really not liking the present schedule which plays them on early sunday, which means she misses church and helping out in the nurserym which she loves to do--and yeah, in know in the summer we miss plenty, but not for a junior high game disguised as a varsity tune up!). sometimes travel practice on sundays when we arent playing in a tourney.
instead of indoor ball, why cant the parent who is basically the coach's puppet during the year, take a group of girls, take the fees they would have used for indoor season of playing 12u teams and scrubs, and go and play a tourney somewhere, like spano or ft wayne. All the girls think about on those indoor games are the homework they are missing and getting home. They have no fun and it's stressful. You go play on a tourney, you chill with your friends, no worries, team dinners, etc.
fyi, watch for burnout and tired eyes syndrome. Stress to them girls that diet and sleeping patterns go a long way

I'll bet I know who your best three ball players are

I think the problem with your suggestion is that many HS programs expect their players to be playing for a HS indoor league team, both as a way of getting practice together and as a way of preliminarily assessing who might be starters come HS season.

believe me, having barely-an-outfielder play shortstop is in no way practicing for the varsity season

I don't disagree, but the question is whether the HS coaches view the league indoor participation as "helpful" to the player's prospects on the HS team. If there is that pressure, then TB teams are not likely to have a lot of high profile tournament opportunities during this time period.

Dead of winter mine will go 2 to 3 days a week while shes n a rest mode between thanksgiving and new years. After Jan 1 she ramps up her hitting to 6 days a week ( yes I know its a little much , but thats her call not mine) I figure shes 16 and knows her bodys limits and capabilities better than me.

cgs, right, and thats the main thing...fear of missing one game is fear of not being labeled "committed" enough...the only thing i want to committ is players to softball jail

WE have the same thing going on SB. WE may have 4 or 5 dedicated. I know it drives the dedicated kids nurs that the other girls come to open gyms and conditioning and have not improved on anything from the years before. Very frustrating. The winter ball they play is with there high school so they feel obligated.

My thinking with this post was to show the girls that are not working on their game. Look here is what the typical tournament or starting varsity player does in the off season to prepare. If your not doing this then your not doing enough. I know it won't probably change their approach but it gets very frustrating. The fastpitch window keeps getting smaller and you would like to see the girls get all they can out of playing with their school team. Thank God for TB!!!!!!!

We play winter ball in a high school league. It is a group of 8'th and 9'th graders from a couple of travel teams. Just to prove your point, we have lost one game against high school teams and they are a heck of alot older than we are. Parents are sometimes a little worried when kids drive themself to the game and make our kids who are mainly Jr High kids look very young.

Statman...if your daughter can breath she most likely will make her high school team. I know girls who have not been to one "OPEN GYM" :D and they will make it over who ever else shows up and they know it because they know who there competition is...reality is difficult for some of these parents to deal with in my opinion.

That is not a shot, it is what has your daughter done on her own to make herself better during the off season? The new bat will not make her a better hitter until she starts using it in my opinion.

Bouldersdad said it best as she chooses too work 6 days a week and is probably one of the best left handed hitters around here or at least in the top 3% per some college coaches opinion.
