Ohio State Buckeye Softball?

Can anyone explain why we have 10 California players on the roster of the Ohio State Buckeye's? There are only six Ohio players, and another from New Mexico. What the heck? Are you telling me we can't win with Ohio players?

If that roster is 15 Ohio girls, yes, they would not be at the level they currently are.

There's talent in this state, but MORE talent in Cali...Ohio's closing the gap on the softball power states, but still a long way from there!

I'm glad you got BUCKEYE PRIDE, but it is - what it is!

Its not talent, but more people to choose from...

Ohio State is telling you that they must have west coast players in order to win. It's hard to argue with them; they are ranked.

OSU isn't the only ohio college with limited Ohio kids. All colleges are looking for the best kids and all kids (from all states) are looking for the best fit. Compare the numbers between colleges and it isn't so different. The Ohio kids on OSU's team are impressive and fill a specific role and have been instrumental in OSU's level of play. Sometimes, it is all about timing and the opportunity doesn't present itself for the above average player at the moment they are ready (wrong year of graduation). In addition, some of the colleges "miss" an Ohio kid too. Build up the kids and the programs as opposed to dragging one college down over another.

Good insight, Sun_Dragon. Going through the recruiting process always seems to answer all these questions. Your statement about timing (grad. year) is so true. Folks currently in travel ball might compare this to trying out for a travel team. What can you, as a player, offer the team? If the roster is loaded with underclassmen who are currently contributing, your odds are probably longer. Or - you could go with a school where everything "fits" - major, love the campus, love the coach, AND you can make an immediate playing impact. Scholarship may also play a major role.

I saw the Buckeyes play last year, and I'm sorry I haven't seen them play this year. But, of what I did see, they were as error prone as any high school team that I have seen. I guess that is why I searched through the program to find out where they were from. What I am worried about is that the Buckeyes have established an artery to the west coast, and are considering a California player over a more qualified Ohio player. Anyway, didn't a Cleveland area 14U squad take second in the world in softball play?

I agree with Sherman, they make as many errors as anyone out there. They are an average team this year ranked 19th or something like that. So no, the California express isn't the answer..... made the sweet 16 last year, but what before that in the last ten years? Ohio kids couldn't do any worse......

There also should be regulations that state funded schools must take "X" amount of in state kids.....

As much as I hate regulations I am with you on that. State funded schools should only award scholarships to Ohioans. Think of it this way, our tax dollars are being used to pay for the education of some cali kid. Only exception I would make is if the sport is producing a revenue to the school. Doubt softball is.

No, but we'll give Tressel 4 new freaking practice fields with lights and his reasoning in the paper was pitiful... The track has lights, baseball and softball have lights and even the parking lot has lights, but our practice field doesn't..... Are you kidding me?? Go practice in the unused stadium that has lights and use that 5 million bucks to help keep tuition in check!!

Comparing to a parking lot which needs it for safety is Pi@@ poor and those others are their playing fields!!! But jack up tuition 10% over 2010/2011

I believe it was Elyria's rec team. But that is the same thing Tess Sito came from. The Elyria Sundogs I believe are the final product of their well developed rec system.

Complaining about CA players on the softball team is the same as griping about MN players on the hockey team, regionally some areas are just further along in some sports and when you get to a higher level of the best playing the best you progress past where area's with lower participation get stalled. I.e. if you have the hands down #1 Hockey team in Ohio it's hard to put in the everyday extra effort to make yourself even better, even if that just barely puts you on par with a good MN program. CA registers 11,000+ teams ASA, Ohio registers a combined 3000+. Add to that year round weather availability and years of the best playing the best at a higher level and it's hard to compete. IMO, Individual players can progress to DI ability almost anywhere, it's just more likely to happen when teams play each other with lineups full of DI talent up and down the roster rather than one star here playing a few stars on another team.

More likely it's $70 football tickets and tv money paying for the education of some cali kid.

I heard that most of the Buckeyes came from one or two showcases in California, and two of the Ohio raised Buckeyes were walk ons. There was a time when I was growing up I thought of nothing else but going to Ohio State, but now for my girls, it is a Bruins East squad or the Northern Trojan team. Anyway, after these kids leave Ohio State, they will return to California, and what have we gained as Ohioans?
