Opinions on coaching

Just would like everyone's opinion of game I attended tonight. District semi's being played with both teams a combined record of around 35 and 9 total. Team A is ahead of team B by a score of 4-0 after 5 innings. After the 5th inning team B replaces all but pitcher and catcher with jv girls and a couple others. The coach even put some of the jv's in positions they have never played before. Starters and parents got very upset as all feel the coach GAVE UP! Needless to say the score got worse and very ugly. What to do?

Yup, the coach gave up. The coach must have figured the team had absolutely zero chance of winning so he or she cleared the bench and let everybody at least participate in a playoff game. I'm not saying it was the right thing to do, but that's what happened.

OUCH! Those Seniors deserved to go out giving 100%. Unless these starters were AWOL and completely mentally out of it, you can't give up in the Playoffs. 4-0 is still a game, even if it looks like 4 runs is impossible. You never know what chain of events COULD have happened to spark a rally. TOO BAD.

That's frustrating...
even more frustrating doing the same thing when you are up and then lose

Don't think I would've been too happy about that either. Anything can happen. Sometimes it takes a couple of innings for a team to adjust to an opposing team's pitching. I've seen a lot of box scores this season where teams don't score until the 5th or 6th inning, then break it wide open.

What about next year?Does coach have say...maybe 19 kids returning with a varsity letter now and half of them playing reserve next year? That can be some drama before the next season starts especially if there are any freshman outplaying the reserve kids who got letters?

Well, you don't get a letter for playing two innings...not sure of the formula, but there is a game/inning requirement to earn a letter and it's fairly significant I believe. Anyone know?

it used to be you had to play in 50% of the innings, but I do not believe that is true anymore..

4-0 is not over, I know my team can score 4 runs in an inning. That is a shame.

Schools/coaches award letters differently ... there is no set formula used across the state. Don't know why the coach would have done that in a 4-0 tournament game after 5 innings ... a regular season non-conference game would be a different story ...
