Well after months of rehab and marked improvement my DD's shoulder pain has returned and now we are pretty certain that labrum and biceps tendon surgery will be needed. We accept that. It's part of the game and we know of multiple young women who have had this surgery and returned to form in about 9 months.

Here is my worry and concerns. She is a 2017 kid who has verbally accepted an offer to play for a D2 school. She has a great relationship with the coach and loves the school. Obviously we will let the coach know about this. Our fear. Her fear. My fear is the offer will be recended because she will be damaged goods.

Has anyone had any experience with this type of situation? Looking to be talked down off the ledge here. Lol

A verbal committment is just that. The coach says we want you and we will pay you this much. The players says I accept. Both sides are free to honor their committment or not honor their committment. [Legal issue v. moral issue.] I assume that your daughter would withdraw her committment if she found something to be wrong with the school or the coach. By the same token, you may assume that the coach would withdraw her/his committment if she/he found something to be wrong with the player.

If your daughter fully recovers I would expect the coach would still be interested in her. If she does not fully recover you may be back a couple of squares looking for a new school and new team. {Please don't jump off the ledge. That will not really be helpful. lol}

I have had the labrum, rotator cuff (front & back) and biceps tenodesis performed. Little or no pain through first 7 weeks, lots of hard HARD work at rehabbing. Your DD has a huge advantage in that she is young. If she works hard in rehab should return to form or very close to it. I found having the tendon re-anchored in a new location altered my motion, but then again I was in my fifties!!lol
No reason she shouldn't recove fully, but it remains to be seen how that coach perceives the surgery. I'm sure if she returns quickly, regains form if that one doesn't work out, she can find a spot somewhere.
How for the best for you & your DD

I would elect to be upfront with the coach. A, there is no way you will be able to keep this from them, so they will find out. Wouldn't you rather it came from you? B, In the event that you would not elect to tell the coach AND they did find out but did nothing with the offer, is this how you would want the "relationship" between family/player/coach to start? I can only assume your daughter might have an uphill climb to repair her "image" as someone who can be counted on with the coach. Isn't a freshman year WITH athletics tough enough, without adding that stress onto it? Be upfront. The coach will then do what they will. Best of luck with everything!!!

My DD will be upfront. I guess I misconstrued my question. Has anyone had a DD that has a significant injury after verbally committing and how did it work out with her and the school? I think that is more of what I was looking for. As soon as her sports ortho makes the call she will call the college coach and inform her. The good news is she is a junior and has time to recover and show it to the school/ coach.

Just guessing it will be dependent on the coach. I could see it going either way.

Look at it this way, it is FAR better that she is verballed now with surgery looming. If she were not and she misses her HS and summer seasons of her Junior year, that would be a disaster.
