ASA Tournament ASA National Qualifier, Canton Oh. June 25th-27th (10u,12u,14u)

These open tournaments are intended to give powerhouse teams (from anywhere) who haven't yet qualified for ASA/USA a chance to do so. But once you have qualified for ASA/USA, you can't participate in another qualifying tournament.

Given the tournament's purpose, it makes sense to have a fairly late registration period. Registration for the Canton June 25 tournament does not end until June 21. Some powerhouse teams will literally be traveling around the country in an attempt to qualify. Once they qualify, they go home. But in the case of Canton, if the team failed to qualify the weekend of June 18th, it might just decide to book flights to Canton for the next weekend.

BTW, as far as I know, as long as all your ASA sanctioning and rostering is correct, you can't be turned down for this tournament. It is not "first come, first served".

google canton recreation department. you will be able to figure it out. it lists links on the left side of the home page.

no teams are listed and very little information can be found.

Ohio ASA website lists this tournament with a link.

Is that correct that once your team has qualified for USA/ASA that you cannot play in another USA/ASA qualifier. Wouldn't you want the best competition to compete against to keep your team challenged and wouldn't your berth should you win again be passed down?

That rule was changed about 3-4 years ago. Now you can play in as many NQ's as you want to without losing a previously earned berth.

you can't get the bid. the beef people have with it though is that, say you are the best14u team in the state. then you go the next qualifier and because of the draw, you knock out the second and third best teams.

then you win the tournament against the fourth best team. now the fourth best team gets the bid and the second and third best teams don't qualify.

Is there anyone else entered in this and have you gotten anything as far as a schedule?

Pretty sure the 12U division has at least the following teams competing:

Ohio Lady Lasers '97 ORANGE
Ohio Ice
Ohio Wolfpack
Grand Slam
Wizards

So, in the 14U there is a team from San Diego and there is the Ohio Intensity. Hopefully they will both be in the same side of the bracket. :) I truly do understand that the Intensity would want to enter this tournament, but I question why ASA would allow that. When a team that has already qualified enters a different qualifier, it pretty much becomes a question of luck as to who will get the "passed down" bid. If you aren't in the same half of the bracket, you have a shot at getting to the final and picking up the bid even if you lose the championship game. But if you hit the Intensity early on, you may well be the second best in the tournament but never get close to the championship game. So it goes . . .

BTW, the first schedule sent for 14U is being revised. Not sure whether it has been sent out yet. Ted is at Pomona on business but I'll post here as soon as he forwards me anything. No Friday play, which is a relief for our families.

hope there are more 12U teams than that - 2 of the 5 already have bids.

Yep, talked to Ted this morning and we play the Maddogs at 9:00 am and the Intensity at 10:45 am. Should be fun.

Somehow I doubt that playing one game against us is going to tire out the Intensity. Those girls practice so hard and so often that they have incredible staying power. But we will do our best to stay in for a full 7!

It used to be if you already had a berth and entered another qualifier you had to recind the previous berth. And as said before that is no longer the case.

Is there anywhere to go to see which Ohio teams already have 14U berths?
