Ahhh yes, I love it when I ask the umpire who has made the call if I can appeal to the homeplate umpire and he yells "NO". After the game the homeplate umpire tells our catcher that if he would have asked him our player would have been safe. . .

Same umpire yells at our coach calling pitches because he ask once or twice an inning where the pitch was so we can train our young pitcher where she needs to adjust to. . . Tells him he is tired of his questioning his calls behind the plate. Wow that was interesting.

Then goes off on the other teams parents who only one time make a comment in regards to a poorly called "strike" on their player. . .

Oh then there was the umpire who wears no chest protector. Does a good job on the rules of the game, but has the personality of a prune. When our catcher ask where the ball was so she can adjust the pitcher he says "it s u c k ed, other than that it was good."

18U co-champs were Ohio Emeralds and Twisters FP, championship game was cancelled.

I thought the umpires were consistent, whcih is all I ask for until the last pair we had. Hone plate umpire called a girl out for a swinging third stike when she had the bat on her shoulder and she was turning away from a pitch that nearly hit her in the head. bat never came off her shoulder.

I looked for you last weekend.. want'd to meet you... those are funny comments above.. we appealed 2 plays, the umpire, called time, confered with the other and made the 'right' call (in our favor of course .. lol) ... wow, we must have got lucky, we did have one ump take issue with the other teams parents and engage in a verbal spat with them - but he never missed a call on the field, even 2 bang-bang plays that had our kids out.

You do bring up a good point .. do umpires owe it to the team to tell them where the pitch missed or should they let the catcher/pitcher figure it out? How does it work in college ball? I am just curious...

I believe it should be obvious to the catcher where the ball is when it's not being called a strike. Catcher needs to be aware and relay info to coach. Our team has the catcher calling the game anyway, but you soon learn where the strikes are and aren't. I have always said, I don't care where the strike zone is as long as its consistant with both teams and stays there. I must say we had fairly good luck with good umpiring all weekend.

LOL, was busy playing your teams. The 14u team had a stud short stop. . .

To the point by knight. . . if it was a 16u team sure let the catchers deal with it. but I have a 13u team and personally don't think at 13 they can handle alot of those types of issues yet. The are just beginning to visually see the pitches and understand the strike zone.

My problems was maybe only once or twice an inning our coach would ask if it was high or low, in or out, and then would work with the catcher/pitcher in between innings so they could understand how to work within the umpires zone.

I even had a JV high school coach watching the game that commented on the umpires reaction. . .

For what its worth I asked a total of 2 times the entire game. I asked once in the first on a pitch that my catcher looked at me wide eyed because she thought it was perfect. I asked again in the 4th on a close pitch that she missed twice consecutively with the same pitch in the same location. My catcher looked at me for advice so I asked the umpire "Did it miss high or outside". He flipped off his mask and walked towards me yelling that I need to stop questioning his calls. "If I hear one more word out of you, you're done". I can understand if you are going to ask an umpire multiple times an inning. I asked him once in the first, and once in the 4th. The guy clearly did not like his job on that day. He was yelling at everyone on both sides, but in a semi-final game he owes everyone quite a bit more patience in my opinion (and yes I umpire as well). On a side note he clearly does not understand NSA rules in regards to DH and defensive players. Is there a reason that a large portion of NSA umpires we have had this year (admittedly very few NSA tournaments) understand this rule?

18u champs were Emeralds and Columbia raiders, (correction) there was a mistake of communication by the umpire to the official during the lightning delay. The umpire said the Twisters and Columbia raiders were scoreless and unfinished when in fact the Columbia raiders won the game 3-0! Columbia raiders put 3 up early and held the Twisters to zero after time ran out and through 6 innings. That was a complete game Columbia raiders win the semi to be in the final game with Emeralds. In the confusion the officials handed the hardware to the Twisters and everyone went for their cars. The confused officials by the wrong score information thought it was a zero-zero score unfinished game which could go back to how they did in pool play and Twisters had a better pool record so thats why they got the hardware.Columbia raiders are waiting for promised hardware as they so deserve to be co champs. The officials acted on wrong information in a quick manner as weather was also an issue. Blame this on the umpire? Columbia raiders on Sunday beat Parma arrows 4-3 then beat Twisters 3-0 to be in final game with Emeralds.

I don't want to disagree with agoch or fetch, but my dd plays for the 18U Emeralds and her trophy says "18U CHAMPS" - it does not say co-champs. We were told that since the Twisters and Emeralds had the best record in pool play (3-0) and the Emeralds won their semi-final game and the Twisters lost theirs (3-0) when the game was called, that the Championship was awarded to the team with the best record, which in this case was the Emeralds.

Tiger, There are many ways to decide a champ between 2 teams that can't finish or play the championship game due to weather, a popular way is a coin flip. Pool play should not count because thats just pool play. Its all about Sunday play, when 2 unbeaten teams are in the finals of a single elimination bracket.I have seen coin flips for 1st and 2nd, and I have seen co-champs.In this strange scenario, the officials thought there might be a 3-way tie, because the officials thought the Twisters and Columbia raiders had tied with no score. (The umpire forgot to mention that Columbia raiders had put up 3 runs early and that the time clock had run out in the 6th.) So with the no score scenario the officials went looking back to pool play for help. They awarded the Twisters with hardware after just being beaten in the semis because of pool play record. Columbia raiders who just beat the Twisters in the semis and went to the finals to play the Emeralds went home with nothing. I think Emeralds flip a coin or co-champ.I hate coin flips and we are not together to do it. We are awaiting hardware for being in the finals.Columbia raiders and Emeralds were unbeaten on Sunday and in the finals, who is the champ? Twisters did nothing wrong, they just lost in the semis and got champ hardware on the way out.Lets just get it right. Nobody likes being beaten if you were not beat.

From the Columbia Raiders 18-u, thanks for making things right. The Diamond Chix are a class act as they are looking out for as many happy girls as they can (we like are girls happy).Umpires and the weather are the unknown factor in all our games. We are coming back next year and it better not rain!

My daughters and I got to witness the 14U championship game between the Ohio Power and Lady Firebirds. Both pitchers were unreal. My two dd's (11 & 9yr old pitchers) really enjoyed watching those girls master the mound. Great game! Congrats to both teams! I also have to say to the girl (sorry can't recall her number) who got the loan RBI. That was a great clutch hit with two outs! Nice job!

Also got to see some of the 10U and 12U championship games. Hawks 98 Black are a very good team as advertised. My dd's played them in pool play but lost 8-2. Coaches were a class act. Congrats to them.
The 12U Starzz played their butts off in this tourney too. Nice Job!

The 10U champ game was a lot of fun. Both the pitchers were throwing some heat and both teams could hit the ball. Congrats to both the Hawks and the Ohio Ice.

The loan RBI was Danielle who had the only two hits of the game, also catching the ldayfirebirds pitcher Jill all tournament long.
Lady 'birddss!
