My daughter just cannot get into using her hips and pivoting on every swing. She has pretyy fast hands. She is a big kid for 11 and strong. If she could just put it all together? Are there any good drills that an experienced hitting coach, or fastpitch coach can advise me on to get her just to use her hips and body to improve her swing?

How are her feet set? Is she set-up "Closed" or 3-5 degrees "Open"? Being "Closed" cuts down on the amount that the hips can rotate.

DD learned from Coach Larabee, who learned from Howard Carrier (Hitter). She did a whole lot of tee work, a whole lot.

Here is a couple of checklists that she was given at the clinics:

Pre-Flight Checklist
a. Determine Depth in batters box.
b. Measure off from home plate
c. Width of stance, 5? offset
d. Bend at waist and soften the knees
e. Gripping the bat
f. Top of hands at top of the shoulder
g. Distance of hands from the shoulder
h. Set hands and bat angle by tapping the helmet
i. Position of front and back elbow
j. Eyebrow Level
k. Big rhythm
l. Little rhythm

Batting Checklist
1. Pre-Flight
2. Load or Negative Move
3. Toe Touch (Separation)
4. Connection (when hands pass in front of back shoulder)
5. Heel Plant (back elbow drops into the slot simultaneously)
6. Bat Lag (bat is parallel to the ground and pointing at the catcher)
7. Contact (elbow-wrist-barrel, back toe pointing down, front leg lock-out)
8. Extension (long through the ball)
9. Finish (over the shoulder)

The checklists do not go into much detail but if you have had the clinics, then you will understand what is meant. It works. Just ask my DD.:) Sadly, most of the clinics are offered in the winter. Hopefully you can find an instructor who can help her now so that results can be seen during bthis summer.

Agree with Bill. Best to take her to a clinic and have someone watch her swing. Bustos has some posted. Since Coach B left WSU, Howard has changed a few things that we teach at his clinics.

Here is something worth srying while you find a coach/clinic etc. Try backwards chaining.

Get a tee and position her in the position she should be at the point of contact (assuming from your post that means turned into the ball with the belly button, knee and back shoe laces somewhat facing the pitcher). Now have her slowly move backwards to a balanced launch position, then slowly return to the point of contact. Discuss what is happening to get from point A to point B.

Make certain as you work backwards that the bat barrel goes back on plane with the ball and that it returns along the same path.

Thanks all that posted...I see a couple of things that I know will be helpful...we had this pivot issue with her through karate too...I will work on some of those things!!

One thing I've noticed with girls is that the kids that can transfer power don't just have good mechanics, they have great core muscles. The skinny kids that can smoke the ball very often are coming in from gymnastics, dance, or some other discipline that was very core muscle intensive. Applies to throwing as well.

I took Shorei-ryu karate in my younger days and for me there is a thrust prior to rotation. A perfectly time punched combined with the thrust on the inside edge of the foot is what the Bruce Lee two inch punch was all about.

Get a concrete block and place it on the outside edge of her back foot.

She will not be able to squish the bug and she must pivot to clear the block.

We teach a slight lift of the heel and focus on driving off the big toe and the toe next to it. This puts the weight more on the inside edge of the foot or everision as it is sometimes termed.

The pivot will not happen at times if the hitter does not understand weight shift in my opinion. If she lands flat footed the weight moves more over the knee and not up against the hip and they become more upper body dominate.

When she throws does her back foot leg release and come forward?

If not she needs to understand when she throws to land on a flexed knee on the ball of her foot.

Then I would start the face the fire drill as it is more like throwing and helps them feel the momentum more in my opinion.

There are some good tips here... I would also offer an idea. I really like the drill when you take the bat behind the back and focus on hip rotation while hitting the ball off the tee. Trying this has help my girls tremendously. Once they get better, add a board so they learn to step forward and not back or away. Go to: http://www.mefeedia.com/watch/26814651

As a youth athletic and personal trainer, I would also like to add that a strong core is essential for proper hip rotation. Be sure to focus on abs AND lower back.

Planks everyday will help strengthen the core muscles. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ar2iRusnnc

Use a stability ball for crutches, ab rolls and back extention exercises. Go to: http://exercise.about.com/cs/abs/l/bl_core.htm
