18u rumor

I heard that the only way 18u players that have played a year of college can compete next year is at the gold level. anyone else hear that? I'm wondering cause we have already set rosters and I'm sure many others have too.

I also noticed that Compuware is having their 18u be an ASA 18u qualifier to Las Vegas and the powers at be there are still restricting it to teams with no players that have played college. The only way they can do that is if the rules have changed... (they also can't limit the number of teams entered or use a the format they are posting if it is an ASA National Qualifier).

If that happens 18U gold and 18u will be soft competiton until things get straight.

looking for answers...

Might as well start tryouts over if that is the case. Maybe they need to change the dates for the age groups back to what they were about 10 years ago.

Doesn't seem fair to anyone - maybe the rule will pass but not go into effect until 2010??
Isn't the ASA National Convention sometime later in the fall? As to Compuware - don't they pretty much do what they want to do anyway? I would think that ASA would certainly govern the tournament - time limits, etc. Whoa!! Time limits?? Didn't David B have to change time limits for the National Qualifier to coincide with ASA rules? Aren't Compuware time limits something like 75 minutes? Sorry - I'm just full of questions.

After the fiasco in Columbus, Indiana this past summer It looks like some things are going to change I'm sure. The State USSSA Director told me that USSSA will most likely be making some changes in November at the convention that will affect a lot of teams for 2009.
Also heard that same rumor that any team with a college player will have to play "Major" if playing USSSA not "A" and that ASA will require any team with a college player to play "Gold" not "A".

I had to let a very good college pitcher go from my 18U team so we could play a Normal type schedule next summer.

Although I currently do not have any college players on my roster for next year, it would certainly be helpful to all of us to find out SOON whether or not this is in fact going to be a rule put in to effect next season by ASA, or any other sanctioning body for that matter.

It seems to me that all the sanctioning bodies are either too lazy or too arrogant to come up with some common definition of what a Major/Gold team is , an A team, or a B team, especially at the 18U level -- they had rather spend time touting why they think their organization is the best.

USSSA a couple of years ago came up with 18A Major and the criteria for that was that if your team had at least one active college player, it had to be 18 A Major. It didn't make any difference if the player was a starting D I player or a DIII player who maybe only played 3 innings all year. Now this made about as much sense as trying to play a game at night without lights. In my opinion, this was nothing more than imitating or trying to imitate ASA Gold. Nothing was ever mentioned about the players' ability.

I like the idea of ASA Gold for those teams that aspire to be the best and let them pitch from 43 feet. I like the idea of 18A teams pitching from 43 feet and allowing college players if that's the level they want to play at. 18B should be reserved for those teams that acknowledge that they don't play the level of ball required of an A team and pitching would be from 40 feet-- in a B only tournament, the pitcher could not be a college player but if there was a college pitcher on the team, she could play any other position. If the B team was to play in an "A" event, then it would be OK for the college player to pitch against the teams in the A event.

it has been a week since I inqured with Compuware and three days since I inquired with Michigan's state director, and Ohio's state and local director and I still have no answers or even comments.

the Compuware issues are huge - time limits, deadlines for entry, tourney format, no limits on college players, etc...

I spoke with the USSSA North director before our tryouts. He said if college player play you have to play 18U Major at Nationals. A at other tournaments throughout the season.

ASA does not have all the restrictions. When I spoke to our director he told me there were no restrictions.

Both told me that the rules may change in November.

Did not check with other sanctioning bodies.

I'm not discrediting any sanctioning body but ASA is what matters to the Classics. And it seems to matter to college coaches too. We have had coaches come to the Toledo Tune-up USSSA to watch us play over the last couple years, but that is because we invite them to see specific players, I don't believe they are there to hang out.

My source was one of our players (that got a scholarship) that told her Classics coach she couldn't play next summer unless they did 18u Gold because the rules had changed - not because the coach requested it.

OK - so the rules may change in November and here we go again. Most teams already have their rosters and tournament schedules set by November. Many of the big tournaments are set by the end of September or middle of October. In the past Compuware was very clear that no college player can participate - end of discussion. Now throw in ASA Qualifier, and things start to change - especially if other tournaments that are not qualifiers allow college players or if ASA does not change the rules for 2209. What a mess!

new rumor, Compuware IS going to allow 18u college players to play because it is an ASA qualifier. This should increase the competiton at both 18 and 16 as 16s won't be as likley to play up. That's a good step for that Showcase.. and it puts the college coaches on the 16u diamonds :)
