As only family members and a few other softball families know (when I had to step down from coaching) my 12 year old son Ryan has come down with 3 major illness. Before I get somewhat in detail for the first time on here there is two reasons I am doing this. (1) Making parents aware just in case their son or daughter starts to show signs of coming down with this. (2) We can really use all the thoughts and prayers we can get as we are in to month number 5 with this. Our boy has never been real sick before, the flu was the worst. Typical boy that loved sports and got solid grades in school. Then out of the blue this came from nowhere. Again I will just hit the surface but put out enough to justify where it stands. As some of you may have seen on the national news the past two weeks and including the Dr.Drew show, there is a town called Le Roy in the state of New York where 12 teenagers has come down with these out of control body tics and couple other things.
Our son Ryan came down with those bad body tics and disorders also back in October. As many doctors dont understand this is called PANDAS (now called PANS) which your antibodies attack your brain thru strept. With our son he is dealing with 2 other issues in which is tied with PANDAS. To this day most doctors will not claim it being PANDAS (including Dr.Drew) since this is fairly new.
He has been out of school since October and just started tutoring 3 hours a week so he can pass 6th grade. In his case the body tics make him not able to control any of his body limbs and always shaking. By night fall his body is so tired he can not stand up and his mind plays tricks on him (which that is finally starting to get better) where he is scared of everything. He is still sharp mentally and doing great on his school work thru his tutor.
Our biggest fear that he is starting to give up hope and if that happens we could possibly lose him.
He has been seeing world specialist in Detroit Michigan, Akron and now in New Jersey. All the treatments and test he has been thru the months and nothing has improved. He has started a new steroid treatment the other day so hopefully that will help.
VERY IMPORTANT.............
If you see your child start with small twitching in their face (eyes and cheeks) and then shoulder and arm twitching, please get them checked out ASAP! This is a very serious illness which is a temporary life changer(atleast we hope it is only temporary). As most of the country does not know, this is not just a New York thing. Yes the spotlight is on that city right now (deservingly so with 12 of them getting sick) but there are many cases in other parts of this country.
PANDAS works in many different ways. I would ask you would look it up if you have free time. These young people including our boy has it worse with this PANDAS and have the body tic issue.
