AAARRGG Yet a Different Date for ASA 14U States?

On October 8, a helpful soul posted that the ASA 14U States would be held the weekend of June 5 in Defiance. If I remember correctly (and that's a somewhat sketchy assumption), I also checked the referenced Defiance web site and confirmed that date.

Now I happened to be checking for what I thought was a yet to be determined date on our schedule of June 12 and it says the ASA 14U states are going to be that weekend in Defiance. So I check the Defiance web site and the date has changed there as well.

Thought I'd kill two birds by venting and alerting others to this change at the same time.

BTW, if the June 12 date is correct, things get pretty interesting. Region 10 teams will have to choose between attempting to qualify through the Sluggerfest tourney or through ASA states. If I were a Region 10 team I'd feel that, as compared to Region 9 teams, I'd essentially been given fewer qualifying opportunites.

There really isn't a choice for the region 10 teams, believe or not my team Doom 95 or any other Cincy Metro team is not allowed to even play in ASA states. We are an Ohio team but we are not allowed to compete in ASA State's.

Explain that one.

Oh, that's right. I think it goes back to the fact that ASA "States" is really a Region 9 tourney, but then recently Marie of the Lasers posted I was wrong about that and there is a Region 9 qualifier separate from the States; maybe she meant the open qualifier that Region 9 hosts, I don't know. It's frustrating the amount of time I have spent trying to figure out the ASA system and I'm really not a stupid person.

Hey CGS,

Here's the breakdown on the qualifiers:

ASA Regionals: Region 9 teams only
ASA States: Region 9 teams only
ASA/USA Qualifier: open to anyone, but hosted in Ohio

There is also a Cleveland Metro qualifier open to Cleveland Metro teams and the same for Cincy metro. Region 10 (which includes Cincy) has their own qualifiers.

Hope this helps!

Marie:

Given the information that you've posted, does it make any sense whatsoever that Region 10 and (I assume) Cleveland Metro teams can't participate in the ASA States? Thanks.

CGS:

Cleveland Metro teams are still Region 9 (because they are in Ohio). Region 10 teams can participate in ASA States, but cannot earn the bid. Where I have put Region 9 teams only - any team can participate, but only Region 9 teams can earn the bid. So, I guess there is no point to participate other than to play good competition.

I hope your right Marie, but in the past I have been told that Cincy metro teams cannot even play in ASA states. I would much rather have my team playing in this tournament even though we can't receive the berth just for the competition.

Is it just me, or are there three fairly experienced (in terms of travel ball) people having this discussion with no simple published resource out there to answer the question? And please don't point me to the ASA web site or their other printed matter. I've spent more than a few hours with those resources and frankly reading state statutes is more simple for me. That might only strike a chord with other lawyers, but they will know the comment is not complimentary.

So................. - then what are the only opportunities to qualify for ASA nationals?

1. Defiance - 6/12 and when else? Now, it looks like Toledo Tune-up, Cap City showdown and asa states all the same wkd - also why don't I see any Cleveland area tourneys out there yet to speak of.

Rivershore is hosting an 14u ASA/National Qualifier July 4th weekend, however it is the same weekend as GAPSS.

Yes, no regional restrictions. It is unfortunate that it is the same weekend as GAPSS, but my understanding it was the only date Patty could get.

Hey Doug - I completely agree with you regarding competition. Maybe things have changed, but it's always been you could play, you just could not earn the berth. I'm sure this is not the answer you wanted, but I guess you could verify with Warren Jones or your commissioner (sorry I don't know who the Region 10 commissioner is).
