I'm trying to determine if an A or B registered team has any meaning other than what nationals or tournaments they can qualify for or play in. Are younger group teams such as '01 vs '00 mean that the '01's are usually registered as ASA B teams or is it up to the coaches discretion? Where can I find out officially how a team is registered?

ASA B is for teams with players from an ASA league. Playing in A qualifiers could cause a team to be ineligible for B.

ASA Code - Article 307 CLASSIFICATIONS OF CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY. (page 36)

H.03.d. Girls' Class B Fast Pitch. Teams and players who participate in Class A tournaments, or higher, that lead to a National Championship Finals, shall not be eligible to participate in the Class B competition. Girls' Class B teams must be made up of players who participate in the same league.
EXCEPTION: A Girls' Class B Fast Pitch team that participates in a higher classification National Qualifier must comply with Article 307 ( B ) ( 02 ).
