The qualifier in Florida for PGF was very poorly communicated. It was almost like it was a secret.

Both events will be tough - but it will be interesting to see where the college coaches go.

So, I feel real stupid now ... what is PGF? A new sanctioning organization? In Ohio yet?

premier --rival association of ASA , 2nd year or so in operation. IMO -- remember IMO ONLY --they formed because ASA was holding USA nationals in locations the west coasters don't agree with and they had some other complaints , maybe valid , I'm not certain. A growing portion of people thought ASA would not listen to complaints . Therefore a new association pops up and holds their nationals in Ca where the CA teams don't have to travel. ---I know I'm going to get challenged on this (Socal dad may have a field day) but at this point Premier looks like West coast regional with all the big hitters plus a few good teams from the east/midwest.
Somehow they convinced Ca's best to skip ASA nationals and play Premier (promise of less travel ?) and Premier is using that advantage , fairly I might add, to promote its self over ASA.

Premier is also fighting for a tv contract I believe. MD

Don't feel dumb, the first I had heard of it was last week in the discussions about Lasers Black 14u playig at 16u ASA States. Looks like a premier tournament being organized by marketers and high end amateur softball people with the goal of maximum elite exposure .... with some commericalism and money making ... (of course).

The 16u list looks impressive, so it looks like it may have some traction, potentially. Since the tournament is co-aligned with USA/ASA it looks like this is going to be an either/or going forward, and another possible shift from the mainstream with the formation of a new "elite" level? .........

1.a. ... Gold
1.b. ... PGF
3. ...... USA/ASA
4. ...... NSA/Pony/USSSA/ASA Regionals

Is this what's going on, now?

Update - December 27, 2010 - Topic: ESPN Rise
Premier Girls Fastpitch, Inc. (PGF) and ESPN Rise have not been able to agree on a critical issue regarding our 2011 PGF National Tournament. As a result, we have jointly terminated negotiations on a new 2011 agreement.
We would like to thank ESPN/Rise for the many areas in which they assisted us to help make our inaugural year a success.
We would also like to assure everyone that plans are in place to provide a televised final that will again reach a widespread audience.
Stay tuned for exciting new updates.
Update - December 26, 2010 - Topic: Insurance
QUALIFIER'S In order for your team to participate in a PGF Qualifying event, you must show proof of either PGF/VTD insurance or Bollinger Insurance. If you have purchased Bollinger insurance, then you will still have to go to the "register_4_pgf_insurance" site and pay the PGF registration fees. This is not the entry fee, but a separate registration fee to be a member of Premier Girls Fastpitch. If you purchase PGF Insurance, then your registration fee will be included in the cost of the Insurance. If you choose to "register only" (no insurance) as a PGF team, you will always have the option to upgrade your team registration to include the PGF insurance and ID cards at a later date.
NOTE: When attending a Premier Girls Fastpitch(PGF)qualifying event, you must have your player and coaches Photo ID cards in your possession. We will not accept a piece of paper showing that you have paid for the cards. Our advice is to register your team early so that there are no problems with your team during check-in.You will not have the long delays in receiving your player ID cards and coaches background checks with PGF/ VTD, as you did with other companies last year.
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP We will only accept PGF/VTD Insurance and Background checks for the Premier Girls Fastpitch (PGF) National Championships. If you earned a berth by either qualifying or by invitation, you must bring your PGF Insurance Photo ID cards for both the players and coaches, with you at check-in.We will not accept any other form of insurance for all PGF Championship events.
NOTE: You must have your PGF player and coaches Photo ID cards in your possession at check-in. We will not accept a piece of paper showing that you have paid for the cards. Even if you attended a qualifier using other insurance, you must have PGF insurance for all championship events.
Update - December 9, 2010 - Topic: Website
Welcome to the new and improved PGF website. We have listened to you and made it easier to navigate and get the information you need! On the left is the new menu bar and can be seen on most public pages. Finding information for the Qualifier you are looking for is as simple as clicking the Qualifier button. So go ahead and play with it. Log on if you have an account and register if you if you don't. There may be a few glitiches as we clear the dust but we felt it important that you get a feel for how our new home works. If there is a problem, you can use the contact us function right from the page you are on. This will inform us the exact page you encountered a concern and help us help you!
The Qualifier information as to dates and sites is updated, the Texas and Arizona Qualifier links are live, more information and the activation of the other qualifiers will posted soon.

Yeah Dan ... good assessment, from what I can tell also. Kinda like the B10 network forming around the cities, populations, and schools in the Midwest, taking advantage of the power of the members, and populations, for max benefit. Given the power of CA softball, the regionality and travel considerations, plus the media and commercial opportunities, I think you nailed it pretty well. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out over time.

Interested in SoCal's and some Laser Black "take" on the situation as well.

Hope the Lakewood Ladies come to USA/ASA though ... we have some unfinished business with them ... from 2007 (oh yeah, that's right!) ... ;&

Thanks for info pickle and manitou ... just looked at their website as well. Surprised there hasn't been more discussion on here to date ... based on both the advertised list of teams and recruiters, it looks like a major change in the landscape has occurred very quickly.

My thoughts exactly ... only money can change things that quickly.

TV contract?? ... powerful tool for marketing, exposure, commercialism and profiteering .... something that well organized could move quickly. Sounds like some smart softball/business people are behind it and if you have the heavyweights from CA on board then you have the anchor for interest ... have heard Bill Conroy's name many times also. But this past week is the first I have really heard about it .... so, like you, just now getting up to speed.

Tough call for 16U, we felt it was an easy choice for 14U. With the ASA and PGF being played the same week we talked to many coaches and figured we only get exposure by playing 14U PGF or 16U ASA that week. Many coaches are planning on splitting the staff and attending both Chattanooga and California. The good thing about PGF is all ages(14,16,18) are within about a 10 mile radius. I did not talk to one coach that was planning to go to Midland,Tx for 14U.

I'd say it goes like this at this point...

1. PGF (Premier) at both 16-U and 18-U.
2. ASA 16-U Nationals still important, but a far second to Premier.
3. Gold still important, but also not even close to the prestige of Premier.
4. ASA 18-U "A" Nationals likely not drawing college coaches outside of a couple of hours of the location of the tournament and a total afterthought for all good teams in the western half of the country. I don't know of a single organization that I would consider a college exposure type of organization from Northern California through Oregon and Washington that considered trying to qualify for the 18-U "A" Nationals.

I wouldn't be surprised to see PGF add more teams in the next couple of years. Hard to turn down the money and there are a lot of top teams from the East, Midwest and South that are good enough to be there. If the trend continues, any ASA National will be lucky to see any college coaches from the major conferences. If ASA ever cared about hosting a true national championship, it was too old and too obstinate to move out of its rocking chair when Gary Haning and Dan Hay came along with PGF and is now getting its rear end kicked.

Wow ... I guess I have been living in a cave. I get most of my fastpitch news here on OFC, and I'm just stunned right now that I am hearing this all for the first time ...

just for fun :
Player Profile : 450 BA in HS at d-2, hit 350 in showcase level travel ball. above average speed OFer , lefty , can slap some. Has above average grades. Talented kid , could possibly play MAC , Horizen or fine D-2 or D-3 prospect .

Why would this kid want to go to Ca to play in any tourney/showcase IF she has no desire to go to college west of the Missisip ? Can't that kid be seen enough at Gapps,Ray, States , QOD etc etc to be sucessufully recruited w/o going to the great Cali invitational ?
I'm NOT talking the 1-4 % that make it to an SEC , or Pac 10 school. I'm talking the other 96 % percent here . Good college prospect but not Top Twenty material . Does it make sense to go to Ca to play ? (other than the obvious great competition) $1500 entry just to play in this event. MD
