Has anyone heard that ASA is now mandating Pitchers and 1ST and 3RD to wear face masks? I heard this from someone but cannot find it anywhere and wondered if this was rumor or true. Thanks

http://www.asasoftball.com Under press releases and equipment this is not posted. So I would guess this is a rumor. Most of the press releases are bats being banned. Why many of us saying wait on buying a bat this year.

Hearing the buzz about the masks myself. ?Might not be a bad idea to have your infielders start practicing in a "Game Face" to get used to them, just incase. ?They aren't a bad idea, anyway. ?

I am a District ASA Commissioner and have attended the last two National Conventions. There has not even been a proposal to make this rule effective in ASA.

Also, I run some softball programs. We do mandate it at 10U and 12U for 10 and 12U's in our tournament program for 1st, 3rd and pitchers. We bought 100 gamefaces at a very good discount and passed it on to our players. We sold alot of them to our 14U's and some at 16U. I have heard of other programs who are starting to mandate it.

My question is, Why mandate this?

Why mandate? Probably the same reason seat belts are mandated, sunglasses while on a motorcycle, cages on a batting helmet. That's what people in the US do. Mandate. We learn from the best...congress.

I want to be in charge of something, I feel like mandating a few new rules. ;) Can't even get anything mandated in my own home!!!

Thanks for all the responses. I thought it was rumor but wanted to be sure because if it was true..I wanted our teams to start wearing them at practices. to get used to them As for why would they mandate them....I mandated it for my DD. She is a pitcher and 3rd baseman. At 3rd, when those batters show bunt, my DD is at major risk when shes so close. I can say it is a choice, but its my choice-LOL
I will say our organization has "mandated" mouthgaurds on all our infielders BUT that still gets the WHY questions all the time too.

Mom I appreciate that you have taken the steps to protect your DD, without someone other than yourself to mandate it. I asked my DD several years back if she would want to wear the "Mask" and she said, "NO WAY!" I agree that they are probably a good idea, but I just can't see an organization making it mandatory.

Ahhhhh, you have solved the riddle of mandatism. It's a primal desire to be in charge of your kingdom and the Divorce Laywers and Oprah and Oxygen Channel took it all away from us. So we join something so we can mandate something and feel in charge. At least that's what I'm told because I'm in charge of my Kingdom!!!! ::)

I mandated the mouth guard to my dd, but one smile and you see the $$$ spent and I don't think I want to pay for braces again! On the serious side, one of the worst injuries happened to a kid wearing braces that got hit in the mouth felding a ball at short. It was bad enough that every parent was buying mouth pieces before the next game.

I'm starting to feel like L. Ron Hubbard, and a need to start up the "Mandatism" philosophy. ?I think I will get Tom Cruise on the line, as my first convert. ?All of a sudden, I feel empowered!!! ? :)

Thanks Ringer ;)

If it is a concern that people are starting to mandate face gaurds would it not make more sense to move back the bases and forget the masks. They are only that close because they need time to field a bunt. If bases are back they can take steps back.

The girl at third still has to play the same defense at the same distance, because as pointed out on J J Huddle bunters and slappers. That is why JoeA brought it up, so slappers would have farther to run. The same argument on Huddle on 43 on pitching safety, but as one our math wizards pointed out on Huddle the human mind cannot react to the added 3 feet, so pitcher safety had no bearing. My dd wears a game face pitching and playing third, because I made her. At short a mouth guard. Last year, when she noticed almost every pitcher at 12U had one on, she didn't fight me . Then she but eye black on with it and girls thought it made them look tough ! Peer pressure was gone.

Why are you holdiong off on buying bats? I was getting ready to purchase some for my H.S. team.

WE mandated the gamefaces because we cannot mandate moving bases or pitching rubbers back. We also had alot of parents wanting us to mandate it so the pressure was off of them. What some thought would be a big issue ended up not being a big deal at all. Once more players wear it, others feel more comfortable doing it.

fast2home,
when it comes to young ladies, no one wants to be the "first" to wear the mask, but like you said, once one girl does it, the rest baaaa into place like the sheep they are...just like with music tastes, tv shows, clothes, guys, etc....

If you want to put our DD in suits of armor just put remote controlled robots on the field and let them sit on the bench so they can't get hurt.
