These are the rules that were voted on and passed today. To the best of my knowledge, this is a comprehensive list and there are no other changes that will made.

As often is the case, most of the speculation and rumors proved to be much ado about nothing. These changes will have pretty much zero impact on the fastpitch game.

Rule

2.1 Move all adult SP bases to 70' Men's A&B only

2.3 Addresses thickness of double base

3.1 Better define safety grip which includes any attachments must be TAPED to the handle.

3.1 Better definition of altered bat including allowing engraving for ID purposes

3.3 Add 52/300 ball as available legal ball

3.6 Shirt rule only for E/Rec SP

4.1 Penalty for wrong number of players in each position in Co-ed game

6.4 Mod 10-player clarification

7.3 Allow 1-1 count in Masters SP

7.3 Allow 1-1 count in Masters SP

10.5 Allow gray ball bag

10.5 Add "silver" to acceptable color of mask

Any news on whether college players will be able to play 18U? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Bretman! That is very interesting - I have been hearing for over 6 months from very reliable sources out west that the 18U - college player rule change was a done deal. Fortunately, we kept our team together and just decided to look for other alternatives. If this is in fact the only rule change and the 18U isnt going to be impacted - that is going to make life a lot easier for us putting together a competative schedule for this year.

If anyone happens to hear any different, please post ASAP. I have and will continue to check the ASA site for additional information.

Changes to Classifications and Eligibility are part of the ASA Code and as such will be cosnsidered independently of Changes to the Playing Rules, I would expect we will hear something on Friday or at the latest Saturday about changes to the ASA Code.

So Bret ~ does this mean they are not going to move 14U back to 43' or that they just haven't finished all their voting yet?

The proposals for moving 14U to 43 feet were voted on and rejected. There were two separate proposals: one for moving all 14U to 43 feet and one for moving only 14U "A" teams. Both were voted down by a wide margin.

And, yes, the issue of college players in 18U is a code issue, decided separately from the playing rules vote. We should know something in the next day or so, as the convention wraps up.

Interesting on the pitching distance at 14U. I thought for sure they'd go to 43 ft. What does everyone think will be the impact on 14U with USSSA now at 43 ft? I can't see teams moving their pitchers back and forth, surely teams will now try to stay strictly ASA or USSSA. What has NSA decided if anything?

Hey good question? with the NCAA coming out with an "approved" college bat list someitme in January will it effect ASA's banned list? Or wil it effect ASA play at all?

The varying pitching distance is going to be interesting.
NSA 14u in PA last year DID pitch at 43.
There are some high school pitchers still eligible for 14u who will all be pitching at 43. (regardless if folks think they should play up at 16u is unimportant)
Not sure if the junior high school programs are moving to 43 this year as well (7th & 8th grade) Does anyone have confirmation on that?

14u Teams playing NSA will pitch at difference distances depending on whether they are playing in PA or out of PA. Why?
But at least it will be consistant for 14u ASA teams regardless of tournament location.

Not a problem in N.E. Ohio don't look like anybody is going to play NSA

The OHSAA has said that using 43' is now optional for middle school ball. But I'm not exactly sure how that will be administered.

For example, it's likely that each individual league will agree upon a standard distance for their games. Not sure what happens if a team from a league using 40' plays a game against a different league that uses 43'! They'll probably just go with whichever distance the home team happens to set up their field.

BTW...the NSA convention ended last week. They retained the 43' pitching distance for 14U as being optional, up to each individual state (same as last year). However, they decided that the 14U World Series would be 43' (last year it was 40').

No idea what the Ohio "powers that be" will decide yet.

At the Central District coaches meeting on Wednesday it was reiterated that junior high pitching distance was 40 feet. Nothing was mentioned about it being optional.

This is in the 2010-2011 OHSAA Softball Sports Regulations manual (from their website):

For the 2011 season and subsequent seasons, the high school pitching distance shall be 43 feet. For middle school, the recommended distance is 40 feet.

"Recommended" isn't mandatory and if something isn't mandatory then it is "optional". Perhaps they have chosen the option of using the recommended distance in the central district.

Hey leave our bright green out of this;&. It is not the same color as the ball, and they might get some stupid idea like NFHSS that banned gloves with white in them even though the balls are YELLOW:mad:
