umpires are graded by coaches after tournys. but how does the umps association handle the grades. seems to me winning coaches would grade higher. how do they decide if its a disgruntled coach or a real complaint?

Coaches have to know what is appealable and what isn't. Fair or foul is not appealable. That's just common sense. So why argue it and point to a spot, etc...
The toughest call in the world for angle is the hit ball that hits two feet fair on the infield inside the base.. takes a bounce to the left and goes over the bag. It's a tough call sometimes.

Rone: I agree... if a TD is charging the same rate for 10u as they are 12u or 14u or above... then the 10u should get two umpires. If the 10u teams are getting a cut rate price on their entry fees.... then expect one umpire and missed calls at second on steal, etc... There's only so much you can cover... leaving a base early ( unless you see it at second base) close calls at second on steals... is not the best views obviously in a one man umpire system.

And anymore with the better 10u's that are out there... two man is the best way to go.

I am sure they take it with a grain of salt when it comes from a losing coach. BUT, if there was complaints during the season on this same umpire... then that is a different story.

I'm just glad none of these complaints seem to be coming from any of the games I worked! :D

I had a great partner and we worked four straight relatively problem-free games. There was one play I called where the coach asked for an explanation, we talked about it and he turned around and went right back to his position. In one game we had a rare batting out of order appeal to deal with (those pop up maybe once a year, if that).

The only play that got a little heated was on a batter-runner being called out for being out of the running lane and getting hit by the throw to first. This was in the late innings of a one-run game (the 12U championship game) so things were kind of tense at that point anyway. My partner handled it well and, after the game, several people that were arguing intensely actually came up to him and apologized (it probably helped that their team eventually won).

Personally, I have worked a couple of games with the gentleman that wears the outside chest protector and can't recall ever having any problems. That's one tricky thing about being an umpire. No matter how perfect you are, you are only one questionable call away from being "the worst umpire we've ever seen".

still would like to know how umpire association deals with complaints. what are the procedures? nothing specific, just general.
