those were the good old days

So "no more free berths"?

Please educate me. Is that for all sanctions or just one or...? Or is it a back door negotiating tactic? I really have no idea but I've heard plenty of rumors but they could be just that.

Lester, Valley Storm could probally explain it better since he is REAL familiar with the concept...LOL.. which I can't blame them for doing so in their events. I can remember the days when an org could have multiple association events and had their CHOICE to go to any association event as an org.

It was a common practice. But, then again, I can remember when a National association would NOT allow you have one of their events.. if you was having another association's event as well. Now, THOSE were the good ole' days...LOL

To be honest Lester, I don't see ANY association telling a team NO they can't go to a National event. NSA use to be the strongest when it came to "NO, you have to qualify".. but in recent years I am sure they might have relaxed their policy as well. Who knows.. I don't personally.

Ask this if you would... do you think that Disney would be quite upset with USSSA if they ever found out that THEY turned down a team to go to Orlando and spend money at their park and surrounding area ?

Do you think the Convention and Visitors Bureau or Sports Commission of any city hosting an event ( and probally paid funds out of their bank account to woe the tournament to their city in the first place) would be upset if they found out an association turned down teams? Sure they would !!!!

It's a game ,Lester. The game is NUMBERS and the number of butts they can put in their motels and the money spent in their locale for hosting this event .. whether it's motel money, restaurant money, grocery store spent money, putt-putt golf money spent .. generally the economic impact.

There are sports commissions in every large city. Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh all have them. They have a national meeting of sports commissions usually in the Fall to attract business for sporting events.. whether it is hockey, inline skate hockey ( which is absolutely HUGE in this country as Cincinnati held an event two years ago down on Reading Road which brought in over 5.6 million dollars to the community and motels was sold out all over this city and Northern Kentucky ), S O C C E R , whatever the sport. They don't care.. it's " How may motel rooms can you fill?" attitude.

It's all about NUMBERS and economic impact. Last year a poster on the OFC said it all when they said a normal motel rate went from $99.00 a night to $129.00 dollars a night on a certain weekend of a softball tournament in a certain city and wondered why ?

These CVB's and Sports Commissions use the motel tax collected to PAY for event to come to their town. At these national conventions, they PAY for events to come to their town and these associations or whatever benefit because of their NUMBERS... the number of attendees from years past.

The first thing a CVB or SC will ask an event cordinator is for the "HISTORY" of the event.. in other words.. the number of teams in the event from the past two years and the amount of motel rooms sold. It's important to keep track of those figures and amounts.

This is why you see more and more events making it a "requirement" to stay at a certain motels. It not only the "per room kickbacks" they receive.. but it is the upfront money they received prior to the event just to bring their event to this city/region.

A few years back, PONY did he same thing in the NE Ohio area. Remember when everyone was complaining that PONY "taxed a team" $300.00 or so because that team did not stay in a "perferred" motel. That so-called "tax" was because they received such and such amount of dollars from the CVB or Sports Commission and they are looking for a return on their "purchase". That's the bottom line of it all. The "tax" was meant to offset the per motel room sold kickback they was getting from the motels themselves at such and such dollars per night per room sold !!!! And odds are, they were getting one FREE room for every 10 to 15 sold.. so that paid for their rooms and the umpires rooms as well.

You can't imagine what I could do for the girls in this area and my tournaments in Clermont County if I had the NUMBERS. It is unbelievable what I could do for the girls.. as long as I was not willing to shove those dollars in my pocket ( which I have never been about money anyway over the years ).

Two years ago, after a poor local event in our area.. teams begged me to run one up against it on the same weekend. I did and a few entered and I released them. Why the teams went back there I'd never know...LOL But, they did. I was set up to get the teams better motel rates in this county and if the numbers came early enough.. I could have given out prizes that was absolutely amazing and unheard of in this State as I had the CVB onboard. But, because of no "history" to the event... there was no "upfront funds" given. It's like "show me". Well, I couldn't. They went back to the lousy tournament

And that is why I say and get blasted all the time about what I say on here.. but to understand the idea of useless " qualifiers" and the mindset DRIVEN into the teams and orgs around here.. you have the understand the thought of "NUMBERS" and the importance of them to associations.

That's where it is all at...believe me.. and this is from someone that doesn't mind getting blasted for trying my best to "educate" people about the business side of girls fastpitch softball.

I took "heat" because I would not included John DeLuca (NSA) into the Global fold in it's FIRST year in Ohio from my own Global people... with me trying to convince them telling them anything with John Deluca is a part of in Ohio will go downhill FAST. Amazing amount of "heat" and the President of Global backed me and my decision in the end. Six conference calls later....LOL

And for people to come on here and say "you have to play ASA to play the best" is people not only blowing smoke up everyone's rear.. but trying to "promote" their own ASA agenda ( which is probally their own ASA event switch over event ).

SoCalDad said it best when he said many events are attended by good teams NO matter what sanction or non-sanctioned.. as long as it is a well ran event, teams are there, good diamonds, communications, gives an effort under adverse weather conditions, etc... In the end, the fact that the TD provided a good time for the girls/teams... IS ALL THAT MATTERS.

And I just have the thoughts that if a TD would separate and have separate divisions in their events.. a TD could offer a level of play where teams/coaches are satisfied. That's my theory based on what I hear from coaches.
