I'm sorry to hear that we had any confusion this past weekend, but as we all know when we get into situations in which the team that loses goes home peoples perception of things change. As the TD for this tournament I feel everything went fine even with the little problem we have here. I'm sorry that this has become some what of a personal attack on some people. I hope that everyone involved can put it behind them and learn from it so that we may move on.
It is my hope that everyone enjoyed themselves in West Liberty and will come back realizing that we are all not perfect.
Thanks Mitch Smith

I wish ASA would just allow metal cleats next year. I know almost all of my girls are absolutely dreading going back to tennis shoes (plastic cleats) this weekend. I think ASA is going to be forced by popular demand soon enough to switch to metal. USSSA, NSA and the others should jump on this to give them a leg up on ASA.

The team losing had nothing to do with anything. ?The confusion arose in games that the team ended up winning. ?Confusion was solely on the umpiring, and their knowledge of the cleat rule, which they surely should have known. ?

Just to add to the pot that has been stirred. ?I was amazed that the umpires allowed a player to take the field with a ring in her lip!!! ?It was clerly evident, even from a distance. ?After the steel cleats, and the 10" high leap, I just threw the ASA rule book in the trash, and went with the flow. ?All in all, it was a great first weekend tourney for us, with good competition, and facilities. ?Umpiring was consistent, and fair as well, when it came to the calling of the games.

Mitch, Im sorry if this seems like i was slamming your tournament I didnt want that at all. As the TD I think you did a great job it ran smooth we had fun. This wont effect our decision to come back one way or the other.

I also would like to apologize if I have offended anyone on this thread, especially WL-UIC. My comments were based strictly on what was being reported and stated in the other posts.

Of course, there are two sides to every story and I'm glad that you posted yours here.

I will stand by the statement in my first post: A sanctioned ASA umpire should know the basic rule- no metal cleats in Junior Olympic/Youth play.
