Bad Behavior

I can honestly say that, this weekend, I witnessed some of the worst adult behavior I think I have seen yet. While we were on defense during our first bracket game, there was a man from the opposing team who sat behind the backstop and yelled to the batters, where our catcher was setting up. The umpire very politely told him to either stop, move, or leave. Same team, another parent was calling one of our players an easy out. Watching another game, I watched a mother from the losing team throw a water bottle at her DD. Watched other of their parents scream at their DD's and heard one tell their DD that they lost because she ****s. When a coach on another team complemented a couple players on a good play, I heard an opposing parent mimic the coach. Yet another coach and some parents were ejected over acting foolish about balls and strikes. Watched a group of parents scream progressively louder as the opposing pitcher was delivering a pitch.

Seriously people? What kind of example are you setting for your children? Please, try to have a little class. Everyone wins some and loses some. You are not the ones on the field playing the game.

I went to a 10u game on Friday....the field crew put up temporary fences around the dugouts. on the fence there was a sign....it said only players and coaches allowed beyond the fence....pretty soon parents will just be banned from the parks.

I do want to say that I am not naming the tournament because I enjoyed the tournament and the umpire staff was fantastic. When there were issues that caught their attention, they handled it fairly and professionally. I do not want to give a bad impression of this tournament. It is not their fault that some people cannot behave in polite society.

Yep those are the age groups that are headed to the Olympics ......but at one time we all did something stupid and hopefully they see the light soon enough to enjoy the kids playing a simple game of beauty when they realize it can be enjoyable.....

It's unfortunate that adults act that way. It does nothing but set a bad example for these young athletes. I always tell my DD that we act the opposite and show respect to everyone, which is what makes this world a better place. We compete hard, with passion, and do it with class! That way we win no matter the final score.

Of the 28 or so games that DD was in high school this season, I did not witness poor sportsmanship by either team or parents at all. Why is this? Perhaps that in high school there is accountability that comes with community. In travel ball you are quasi anonymous and some very poor behavior can emerge. I am not trying to be preachy because I have been guilty of some stupid behavior myself, but it has been during summer ball where you run little risk of seeing anyone later at the library or grocery store, or worse embarrass your DD at school.
I have seen the kind of behavior that Crystl mentioned and yes it is appalling but some parents just treat their kids that way. I guess one good thing is that If your DD sees it too, she will realize what nice parents she has.

Wow, All in one weekend. I hope your life significantly improves.
There is no reason for any one of those events taking place let alone all of them in one weekend.
Bad Behavior is bad behavior and there is no excuse that can justify it.

Totally Agree Crystle! saw a lot of poor sportsmanship from parents and some coaches but mostly parents!! and why do pitching parents think that crow hopping is OK ? and if the other team points it out to blue holy h*ll breaks out from threats and loud obnoxious comments about "crying" from coaches and fans etc..... bottom line, read the rule book and teach proper footwork. if the girls back foot jumps 6" off ground and lands 14" in front of the rubber with no drag..... that's crow hopping people. Yes, I agree to let the girls plays BUT you have to follow rules and that's why they make rules. Adults at the last 2 tourneys I played at have been louder meaner and more disrespectful than I have ever seen. I hope the rest of the summer people are a little nicer. 12u age group.

So curious ... Wondering if it was the same one that one of our girls got punched in the back during the handshake after a big comeback. And the parents flipped off our girls... Must have been the full moon...

I was guilty my self this weekend of losing my cool in the middle of one of our games as an ump made a horrible call . One of my players was hit directly on her right hand & she is left handed batter , ump behind plate calls dead ball but ump in field over ruled him saying it hit her bat first ( hand was swollen and we had trouble getting batting glove off ) . I yelled at him and said her D*** hand is broke and you think it hit the bat first !?! I did tell him and my team I was sorry for losing my cool like that. I just wanted to get this off my chest as I should not of handled it that way . On a side note ( not the same game as my blow up ) I really wanted to recognize Ohio Glory'01 for their outstanding sportsmanship ! They were class acts weather they won or lost !

Turns out she wasn't hurt too bad , it was just the point of the whole thing . She was actually trying to get out of the way of the pitch ( she should've turned but instead tried to back up ) the plate ump agreed with me after the game that she did not attempt to hit ball . The field ump on the other hand changed his story by the time game was over and told me he said " I called it a foul cause she was swinging " A. That isn't what he said when it happened & B. She was not swinging . If he would have said she attempted to hit the ball originally , then I would've disagreed but I would not have made a seen . His exact quote was " Foul ball it hit the bat 1st then her hand " . Oh well !

A hit batter is the plate umpire's call all the way. The base umpire should keep his mouth shut and not be interjecting himself into this call.

If this was my partner, we'd be having a serious talk about this after the game - and it probably wouldn't be pleasant.

In a game before ours in a tournament in eastern pa today, one head coach told his girls to "punch" the other girls at the start of the game. Then when the opposing team's fans cheered, he would shout at them to be quiet, and he was being really obnoxious! The opposing team's coach then stepped up and told him to stop and the other coach pushes him to the ground. Police were called, but nothing happened.

That is shocking and saddening.
