Base running question

I have a general base running question that I am currently debating with another coach and wanted to see what anyone else thought...........
He is teaching the "arm sling" motion for momentum. He wants all the girls to start on the base with their arms over their head and as the pitcher delivers the pitch, they are to sling their arms down and behind them to get more momentum to get off the base.
I say that it is awkward and you never see a sprinter in a track meet doing that. I say start low and push off the base with you foot, similar to a sprinter coming off their block. Keep in mind that I do not think their hands should be on the ground like a sprinter.
I look forward to reading what you all think and/or teach. :)

This was tested prior to the 2004 games...they have more people on staff than they do players. If you notice or at least the last game I watched last week none of them do this anymore....the sprint start or the cross over covers more ground than the rocking jump move. Do your own stop watch testing and you will prove it yourself and the debate will be over and then it comes to an opinion...and we say everyone has an opinion and we bring data....get your stop watch out.

I always thought the "arm sling" motion wasn't necessarily for momentum, but more for a timing mechanism so as not to jump too early. ?If you are pulling down at the same time the pitcher is....it is supposed to give you the closest time to jump. ?JMO. ? ;)
