From the December 2010 Board meeting:

Utica High School's softball coaching staff violated Sports Regulation 5, Instructional Programs, and Sports Regulation 7, Open Gymnasium or Facilities, when it organized structured activities for members of the team during the 2010 practice period reserved for pitchers and catchers. As a result, the OHSAA has ruled that the school's coaching staff is only permitted to allow its players to be involved with general conditioning and weight training during the 2011 period reserved for pitchers and catchers (February 21 - March 6).

Batavia Clermont Northeastern High School's varsity softball coach violated Sports Regulation 4.9, Members of the Interscholastic Coaching Staff-Team Sports, when he coached two members of the school team twice during September practices and twice during scrimmages in September and October. As a result, the coach is prohibited from coaching the team during the first four contests of the 2011 season (he may not travel to a contest with the team or sit in the dugout) and the school has been fined $150.

Cincinnati Glen Este High School's varsity softball coach violated Sports Regulation 4.9, Members of the Interscholastic Coaching Staff-Team Sports, when he coached a member of the school team during two weekends in September for a total of seven contests. As a result, the coach is prohibited from coaching the team during the first four contests of the 2011 season (he may not travel to a contest with the team or sit in the dugout) and the school has been fined $150.

I am sure there is some higher purpose OHSAA serves by this picayune tic tac approach to high school athletics, but for the life of me I can't see it.

But, what I can see is this -- with more and more school districts going to pay to play parents are going to question A. whether its worth dealing with this BS, and B.Whether it's better to pay the pay to play fee say $500, or just pay the travel ball team fee and be done with it?

Crazy just crazy.....I know for a fact the Glen Este coach did not coach but sat in the bleachers or in a chair......just bizarre...I don't even have a horse in that race but think it is totally unfair, I even askked why they were not coaching and was told due to the rules ......how much more can they do to abide by the rules?

This is what our school administrators want. Just as college presidents want the NCAA and the BCS, secondary school administrators want the OHSAA and its ilk. A strong belief in administrative agencies and bureacracies is, apparently, what they learn as they get their Ph. D's in education. It is an open admission that they are not capable of policing their own athletic programs, whether through their own incompetence or lack of trust for one another.

Did you read the one to peitition to make a kid eligible to play sports after being deemed inelligible due to the 5 F's on the report card? How do you let your kid bring home 5 F's and want to fight for eligibility? I will assume the child missed most of the classes due to personal reasons is the only way I could think to allow this to happen or want to defend it, otherwise not playing sports would be the least of my kids problem. LOL

A 12th-grade student has been ruled ineligible for the second grading
period of the 2010-11 school year in accordance with Bylaw 4-4-1, Scholarship, because she did not receive passing grades in five one-credit courses or the equivalent during the preceding grading period

Before you jump to conclusions this student could have had 4 A's and an F, or quite possibly only took 4 classes, which OHSAA says they have to take a minumum of 5.

There was a young lady a few years back that through no fault of her own only took 4 classes and then was ruled ineligible by OHSAA to play softball her senior year. The school said it was alright, then found out they were wrong!!

It read that she did not receive passing grades in 5 one credit classes, so to me, that means she failed them all! She could of been with child, who knows, but 5 F's is what I got from the article.;&

She could have easily had 4 A's and an F. Nuances and semantics are the lifeblood of lawyers.

Not just a few years back, but last season to a freind of mine. Of couse she only needed a few credits to graduate and AD told her that her course load was fine, but come to find out she did not have enough and missed begining of softball season.. A student who was told by admin she was fine, then found out differently.. appealed to OHSAA but still ruled inelligable..

Thankfully she has now gone on to play at the next level!

Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it
(Alinsky 1972: 130). This is perhaps Saul Alinsky’s most controversial rule and is the counter to the common idea that we should not make things personal. When pursuing the changes in the inheritance law for paintings he targets one individual. He found out that people who inherited expensive paintings could avoid inheritance tax by allowing the public to have access to the painting. He got the public to ring up numerous people who had done this and request to see the paintings. When they refused, or refused everyone he managed to get the law changed. He will often find out who the CEO is in a company and hound that person. In the organophosphates debate it is one scientist that he targets and the validity of his findings.
