This past weekend, player drops down a bunt, in the process of running to first, drops her bat in fair territory, the bunted ball rolls and makes contact with the dropped bat in fair territory, ruling? The umpire's call was foul ball.

It can be if the ump does not feel the bat was placed strategically in his or her mind. This can go either way.....wouldn't be found but rather an out if intentional

The ball can hit the bat but the bat cannot hit the ball. If the ball hits a stationary bat in fair territory its fair and a live ball as long as the umpire doesnt think the batter placed it their purposely. If a moving (rolling) bat hits the ball in fair territory its a dead ball and the batter is out.

I think snoman is right for the most part but, if I remember right, this is one of those where it depends on what rule set is being used ... hopefully bretman or socal_dad will chime in and clarify.

Foul ball??? I can see where it would be fair ball, live. I can also see dead ball, out. I don't understand the call of foul ball. Did the coach ask for or receive an explanation?

As already mentioned, if bat hits ball its interference, if ball hits bat it's "nothing".

(That's a bit of an oversimplification, as there are rare exceptions to the rule. But for the purposes of this play this should be a good enough rule of thumb.)

Now, the fair or foul part...

In "non-interference" cases of bat and ball contact (ie: ball hits bat) if the contact is over foul ground then the ball is immediately foul. But when the contact is over fair territory the ball isn't immediately fair! It's "live and in play" with the fair/foul status not yet determined. That is determined the same as on any other batted ball (where ball first is touched by a player or settles, etc).

On the play in question...where did the ball go and what happened AFTER the ball hit the bat?

After the ball struck the dropped bat in fair territory, the catcher picks up the ball in fair territory. At this point the umpire announced "foul ball". There was no confusion as to foul/fair territory, as both bat and ball were very much in fair territory. Hope these details help.

The coach (me) did not request an explanation. It was a portion of the rule book that was foggy to me so I steered clear of entering into a conversation about it. I will be better prepared next time for sure.

I would of loved to hear his/her explanation on that one
