Calling off the dogs

When is it appropriate to call off the dogs in a game that gets out of hand? When do you start pulling starters? When do you stop stealing and bunting? When do you start leaving base early?

We played a game this past weekend that we lost 10 to 2. The other team stopped stealing, a lot of their girls went to the left side of the plate just to practice there. They could tell that our girls were not going to make anything happen so they stopped being aggressive. I appreciated it, not sure how our coach felt. Not sure he even noticed actually! :lmao:

I dont know that there is a specific time to call off the dogs. I know in the Toledo City League some of the inner city schools are just learning the game. The bigger softball schools will generally start their number 2 or 3 pitcher and the bench players that are so vital to a teams success get their much deserved starts.

Very often before a game a coach has a good idea that the score is going to lopsided, maybe after you get 12 runs and you know you could score 40 you call off the dogs.

When your not sure if the team you are playing just had a bad inning or that they are bad maybe you give it 2 innings to see where you are at. There is no reason to embarass kids playing the game we all love.

i dont believe in embarassing kids either but once you bring number 2 s in i like to work with them in scenarios that will benefit them running aggresive so on .last year we played a team in gahanna in the first inning we were up 13-0 we switched everyone to hit with opposite hand my dd is a lefty we had her even swing right.we had some runners leave base early so on and so on i really dislike those games you have to be careful it can sometimes be more degrading to the other team when they catch on your girls are hitting opposite hand or whatever.we were 10u so there is not quite the amount of elite competition but the moral is pick your tourneys well beat the best to be the best.if you are winning that big in travel ball you need to find better tournaments .furthermore how many people (coaches) have a short list of teams or coaches that you would wait a little longer to call off the dogs or not call them off at all(be honest)i do

Interesting topic---always seems to touch a nerve with some folks.

Hopefully no one enjoys a rout. There's no glory in lopsided victories.

As many above have already stated---can be used to get girls in that normally don't see a lot of playtime, let players try positions they don't usually start, or to work on some plays that need practice.

But there are some that say "never let up", or "it would embarrass the other team if we didn't play all out".

I know some parents that can't enjoy a game unless they are assured a big win, but where's the thrill in a game where the outcome is never in doubt? Personally, I relish a close, hard fought battle. It's no shame to lose a game if both sides played well.

No one enjoys getting beat and I can certainly understand that. We had a game last night and the other coaches were grousing and we didn't even have enough runs to mercy rule them yet. The score was 9-1 in the 4th.

They were even less happy when we put another 6 on the scoreboard in the top of the 5th to get over the mercy limit. We had already stopped bunting and straight steals, only advancing on hits and passed balls.

Exactly---damned if you do and damned if you don't. No happy solutions.

Believe it or not, sometimes it hard to tell, especially at a JV or Freshman game. I had a game two years ago in which my opponent scored 11 in the first and 4 in the second to go up 15-0. We win 28-16. Go figure.

Came back 28-16??? That's insane!!! I guess you never can count a team out, lol. :D

It's a game by game thing, but everyone on our team and coaching staff knows that there is a point at which we go station to station and if it's REALLY a bad situation, our players understand their 3rd base coach, a/k/a their head coach, may ask them to leave early.

My suggestion is to get to the run-rule difference +2, then do what you can to try to more or less maintain the difference. If you dip below the difference, call back the dogs.
