Candrea not liking Kobata's training?

I just read a comment on allaboutfastpitch.com that said that a few years back, Mike Candrea invited Kobata to one of his clinic's. Candrea supposedly didn't like what was being taught and never asked him back again. Anyone else read/hear this?

I would wonder why ? And did he actually say this or is it here say or just plain old BS. It sure seems like a lot of elite teams out west and all over the country use this technique.

Kinda like Mark McGuire saying he doesn't like the Albert Pujols approach to hitting...

I can honestly see why he would say this. If Kobata's way is indeed the way, why don't they use it in major league baseball. Its just my thought if you have good fielding fundamentals and a strong arm, you can be just as effective.

I have coached a lot of girls that went to Kobata clinics who try to rush everything, and in the end it looks simply ugly and the throws are all over the place.

Going to clinic will not make them a expert at that style. Like anything else practiceing that way. Alos your not comparing apples to apples. JMHO

Pretty much IMO any clinic you go to that teaches you something different, if your coach or a parent or whoever you have in your life who coaches/teaches you the game, if they aren't up to speed or reinforcing what you just learned your wasting your time and money.

Than they are not doing it right. Like every other technique, it has to be done properly to work.

Some of the techniques he teaches are used universally, but some are modified for the faster game. In general, the differences are that the basepaths are shorter than baseball and the throws need to be quicker.

This is really a poor argument. If the fault is the training, then all Kobata trained students would have ugly throws and poor accuracy. I can site you plenty of cases where some Kobata trained students were the best fielders on the team.

What got me into it was, my oldest DD has a lot of range but once she got to a ball in the hole she wasn't able to make a throw. Then she started playing for a coach fully versed in Kobata, he taught her pivots and cuts making those previous tough plays easy for her. I'm a believer, I've seen the results with my own two eyes. I now teach it to my teams and my other 2 young daughters.

Having talked with Howard quite a bit this past week he told me about a time that a 3 time All-American college player from Arizona worked with Howard and some of his students who where a lot younger. Most of the time his students beat the All-American when executing different plays. If you watch the USA Team videos especially the fielding portion some of the techniques may be different but you see a lot of the techniques Howard teaches being used by the players on the team. It is not about how hard you throw but how quick you make the throw. On his new video series there is a 10 yr old girl who is able to keep up with the older girls in the video. If she was doing an old style baseball type technique she definitely would not be as fast or able to keep up with the older girls.

Kobata is mostly about footwork, pivoting, angles, weight distribution, transition, and positioning. Not necessarily throwing mechanics/fundamentals. The two are separate entities and skill sets, but need to be used together.

I am a lucky one this week since I have had the privilege to spend time with him from last Thursday until this coming Wednesday morning.
I was wondering if any programs out there would like to be involved in Howard's clinic (no, I am not his manager or promoter)... just someone who gets to watch a number of his clinics.
We would like to bring him back to Wizard World early next year and sharing the air fare with other programs benefits everyone. Please email me at fast2home@yahoo.com and I can check his schedule and give you any info on his clinics.
BTW, we had about 60 players from Friday-Tuesday participating in his clinic.

thanks,
Martin

The Kobata way? You guys are killing me. When you were growing up you were taught the right way to catch a ground ball. You did not go to some clinic and pay somebody to teach you how to catch the ball. Your Dad took you to the field and pounded hundreds of fungos a week. Does it make you better if you pay somebody? Save all the money you spend on private instruction and buy some ball a tee and a net and work on your own. Get your kid into a school gym and hit groundballs as much as you can. Better yet get you kid into an ACT or SAT prep class. Better yet maybe take the private lesson money and save for college. Then all those experts that charge through the roof might have to get a real job.

That's great if Dad/Mom know what they are doing. If not, than they are just pounding in the bad habits that take so much time to break.

When I was growing up, we went to any clinic in the area, they were few and far between back then. We learned from people who knew what they were doing first....THAN we practiced for hours at home. I've met many parents who have no idea what to teach a kid and they are the first to admit it. Clinics are a great tool to learn the proper fundamentals.

Yeah, and why we are at it... why pay a doctor, a mechanic, a lawyer or anyone else? Just get out there and do it yourself instead of paying someone!!!!! I am with you Bagger!!!!
