I agree about the Academia mitts. We love them.
I believe they are a combination of leather and other materials and tend to be slightly lighter.
Quick to break in and tend to be less than Nokona which are great. Look at some softball first base mitts for young catchers also. They tend to have more foregiving pockets and are useful if she moves into the field.
