As they get older they will figure it out. Coaches like well rounded kids and if they can do well at both, let them. Yes, it does become time demanding, but those that want to will figure it out. The girls eventually do as well on the one that they love. Sure we'd love them all to do the one we'd like, but it's their decisions to make. We had one coach tell us they do team building and went out and played B-Ball, one girl never touched one in her life and they said other sports work different muscles and wished more girls could balance it.

amber1. Same boat on the same two sports. Both want her because of her speed.
She loves both, but July is becoming a real pain. High School S!!!! wants her to practice 4 days a week and play 1 game a week. Travel softball has every weekend booked and we plan on traveling in July for Nationals. So we had to have a meeting with the high School coaches last night. They are willing to give us a break, because of her talent, but what about kids that just want to do both. Unless you are a star, they can make if very difficult for you. IE keep you down on JV, because of missing practice . I also coach our high school summer softball team. These are the kids that can't play travel. Each night I'm missing 3 or 4 kids that have been told they must attend Summer Basketball, Summer Volleyball, and Summer Soce11111. Our high school softball summer team is going to fold next year, because it takes 16 kids to field a team.

Right now, my DD plays three, s*****, basketball, and softball and is starting her sophomore year. As long as she keeps her grades where they should be (not just up, but where they should be :D) she has the option to play all three. Lucky that basketball coaches are just happy to have her right now. Her conditioning program is great, but she knows that if she really wants to chase the softball scholarship, one sport will have to go. Maybe that's why she knows her grades come first! ;&

I will say over the years, most kids drop one when they become a JR or Sr. Soce!!! has lost the battle to softball in our school over the years as the kids get older. Basketball and Track are the sports hurting our softball program, Basketball mainly because they have them playing 12 months.

Thanks all!! My dd is 12 and I feel better not making that decision yet. It works a little bit different down south where we were playing softball tournys in Dec. and Jan. Which makes it a 12 month sport. Sokr just got in the way.

Thanks again

All things being equal, college coaches generally pick a multi-sport kid over one who's focused only on softball, excluding pitchers. First of all, it's almost a certainty that if a kid can make a HS socker, basketball AND softball team, they are an athletic kid. A single sport kid has more to prove.

Also, college coaches want organized kids who can keep their grades up. A 3-sport kid in HS has to work harder year round, because their "sports season" never ends. It's not for every kid, but the ones who can do it are showing that they can handle a tough schedule.

As long as the grades are kept up, multiple HS sports are a good challenge for the student-athlete.

Put your focus on softball, but play volley ball for quickness or s o c c e r for toughness, or run Cross country for the cardio....play basketball if you want bad knees.

Multiple sports make a better overall athlete, but focus on one...play more than one.

Isn't it softball season!@# Making practices MANDATORY for FALL sports in june and july is absolutely ridiculous. You shouldn't be penalized for missing an open gym,and have your athlete threatened to seat the bench because of it .!Once again RIDICULOUS!!!!

That is what one of my players told me too. I would call the AD or the State. Stupid

Some of the best showcase tournaments are in the fall. Wolfpack's Best of the Best, Akron's Team camp. BG has hosted one too. Then in the winter there are other opportunites, Kent State's Camp, Akron's, Queen of Diamonds, plus some quality game time in Fort Wayne and Spano.

I agree that be well rounded is good for the student athlete, but being on top of your game that you want to play in college is good too. I never ask a player to drop a sport but they seem to be wishing they were with their summer team in the fall and winter when we are off to someplace playing ball and getting better.
