CHOOSING YOUR TEAM

It?s that time of the year again!!! Summer season is almost over, Nationals are in progress and you are looking forward to some time off!! Well, just hold off for a while as one of the most important things you have to do this summer is still ahead!!! YOU NEED TO PICK A TEAM THAT GIVES YOU THE MOST OPPORTUNITY TO DISPLAY YOUR TALENTS. Here are some tips on choosing the right team

1. Go to a least 3 tryouts of teams you are interested in
2. Make sure you stay in playing shape for those tryouts
3. Make sure they need a pitcher
4. Ask how many pitchers they carry. I feel that 3 is a good number, with 2 #1?s and someone who pitches and plays positions.
5. Check out the team?s tournament schedule for the level of competition
6. Try to get information on the coaches, are they fair, knowledgeable, organized? What is their Philosophy? Win at all cost? Teaching the game?
7. If you are college bound, make sure your team knows how to deal with the recruiting process and has contact with college coaches.
8. Beware of ?Daddy/Mommy Ball?. Ask around. Some parent coaches are very fair, others are very blind.
9. DO THEY HAVE AN INDOOR PRACTICE FACILITY!!! VERY IMPORTANT
10.Can you afford them? Ask for hidden costs and what is their fundraising strategy.
I know that you are all at different competitive levels, some of you play for the enjoyment, some play for the competition, some play for the chance to get a college scholarship. Whatever your purpose, there are teams out there that fit your needs. Take the time to research your choice to make next season an enjoyable one.

That is great advise, I only wish I had it a year ago when we picked the team my DD played on for her first time on a 10U team. She was a 10 yo first year player with several years of rec ball. I assumed any select team was an improvement from the rec leage, oh how wrong was I. After it was too late I found out this was a first year 10U program with under prepared coaches and a bunch of hand picked "all-star" girls and they had tryouts to fill the last couple of spots. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, this will never happen again I can promise you that. The saddest thing is only one of the 3 coaches improved over the last year, they still do lots of stuff that makes no since, and they have a great core of coaches at the older levels but do not want any guidance from them. I feel sorry for anyone that gets caught up in their mess this coming year.
