CLEARING UP ASA BID QUESTIONS - AND PLAY FORMAT

Two years ago the ASA to change how ASA/USA bids how given. There are 105 to 189 possible bids thru National Qualifiers, Regions, and other national tournaments. What most of you are not aware of is, Associations Registering 201 + teams (Based on Girl?s Fast Pitch registrations) get 1 (per age group) ASA/USA bid. This is on page 281 of the 2005 Rule book.

The ASA/USA Cleveland Metro Qualifier the "operative words" are Cleveland Metro. What this means is the tournament is an open tournament but the highest LOCAL finisher gets the bid. Or if no teams from the Metro want to go, the highest finisher in NE Ohio will get offered it etc.

Finally I checked with the ASA National office and you can have any pool format to seed the brackets, but the final brackets must be double elimination, this was approved at the ASA in November.

So this e-mail from Cecil Givens no logner applies?

At the council meeting today it was decided that the format for all ASA Regionals and NQ's would be triple elimination (3 game guarantee) and the entry fees for all these tournaments is $300.

Is it just me, or is it getting more complicated to qualify for ASA? I mean, I was told that our team could qualify ASA "A" by attending and placing high at the 10U qualifier in Toledo June 23rd thru 25th. This came from a reliable source, so I assume it to be correct. :)

it's just too many people that are having their inputs confuse the issue.....you want to qualify for the ASA "A" Nationals. Here are the basics:

1st ASA has divided the State of Ohio into 3 Metro's and the State, they are all, on equal playing fields. If you are a part of the State under Howard Honaker the ways you qualify are...

1st Attempt gain a bid through the National Qualifiers June 23-25 1st place team only.

2nd Attempt place in the top 2 ( maybe top 3) in the State Championship on July 7-9

The Metro's Cincy, Cleveland and Dayton has thier on qualifying procedures.

Some may argue there is a no State Championship, but i'm here to tell you it's the State for Ohio, not Regional

Bink
ASA qualification process has not really changed much in the last several years. Ron mentioned the most common ways, and as has been stated elsewhere, you can place in the top 2 of the Eastern Nationals to qualify for next year, or the top 8 (I think) at the Hall of Fame tournament in Oklahoma. For most teams the Region 9 tournament appears to be the "State tournament". Cincinnati area is part of region 10, and there are restrictions that are enforced about who can play in regional tournaments.

DogsDad, thanks for the info. I know that RS was my reliable source, so I kinda knew that we need to finish first at Toledo to recieve a bid. The Metros are whats confusing to me? If the bid is only for local teams then I now know why we've never attended them. JIMHO, but why would a more local team want to travel all the way to ASA 'A', the competition there is at a completely different level then most Midwest tourneys. I mean even the best of the best teams from Ohio have to fight just to leave ASA "A" with a + .500 winning percentage. :)

In some cases metro areas have not had an interest from teams to accept the berths, much depends on where the Nationals are located etc. and whether there are teams within that area that are prepared to travel. There can be a lot of teams that are registered as ASA teams that are not actively pursuing a berth to Nationals. For example the last I knew the GCGC league in the Columbus area was ASA, and many of the teams playing in it are looking for a better level of competition then if they stayed in their own rec league, not necessarily looking for a nationals berth.

DogsDad or Ron--

How do you know what Metro you belong to? Maybe it's a silly question, but I am assuming I'm in the Cleveland Metro and maybe I'm not. Based on a message from Sacham, the Eastlake tournament is an "A" ASA qualifier, but based on what you both have said, only "local" teams can earn this berth. By "local" do you mean teams that fall under the Metro umbrella? Everything else, I understand now--thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and breaking it down in plain terms (btw).

If you could let me know, that'd be great!! Thanks :)

I am sure Mr. Burk can do a better job then I can in determining what if any Metro area you belong to.
