My dd's team this year basically decided they wanted to stick together and told their coach that where ever he was going to coach next year, that's where they were going.

How about coaches posting tryouts 2 weeks into a season. If the coaches can do it why can't the players? Was a part of what we thought was a very good situation until the coach talked to a our high school jv coach, he preceeded to tell them that my daughter had no chance of playing varsity as a sophmore and he immediately turned on her. He then treated her bad and tried to get her to quit! Little does he now know that she is in line to start varsity next year for a very good D2 program. She has already been contacted by 3 different programs to come play for them. The worst part is she really enjoyed the girls on the team... guess he should of used some common sense instead of listening to him!

I've approached players and told them I'd take her on my team next year.
I approached a coach this weekend and told him if a certain player needs a team next year,I'd take her.
There was no disrespect and hopefully taken as a compliment?
Maybe it was a cool way to compliment and recruit?
Find that method effective but cordial.Parent/player/coach should take it as a compliment?
Usually players look for other options based on that years experience or hearsay what they need to do?

But I think it is not cordial to secretly grab the parents or bad mouth a coach or tell them why they need to leave and join your team.

Coaches do get a bad rap for showing at tourneys that they are not playing in from other coaches...or even going to tryouts when thier kid is not really trying out for that team...?

Oh,and I need another pitcher,2nd base,power hitter.

I am ok with players being courted by other teams as long as they honor their one year commitment. Let's face it - each year players come and leave. If you treat the girls right and understand the goals of each of your girls, then they will stay if your team and coaching style matches their goals. Actually, I think that some turnover is good. It is a small community and as long as they do it the right way, everyone understands. I personally rarely recruit. But depending on the level of organization you join, it supports drastically different goals. So I say let your players play as a pick up with other teams. Be confident that they will come back if it is a good fit.

Coach Murph

You approached me about 3 players-took it as a compliment for 3 of my players, and it was about them playing on teams you don't play for but encourage! What the heck?Looking out for kids best interests that aren't your players or going to your team?!Telling me what teams need certain players?!I take that as a compliment and cudo's for a guy looking out for kids best interests.

I agree. Let your results and coaching be able to attract good ball players. There's a female Stingray coach you have to watch snatching players during the seaon while running off her own players!!!

Have you address the coach about your concerns or just hiding behind a screen name. Maybe the coach is not actively snatching players, maybe the players are actively searching for her as a coach and the oppritunity to get a player due to circumstances you might know of.

If coaches are recruiting to steal players during the season, that is wrong. Maybefind out and know the whole story before you vent about something you might not know everything about. Remember there are two sides to what is going on.

I have had some coaches approach my DD and a few other players last year. Our team was doing very well. At first I thought how great it was that they were being noticed, but then it sunk in what they were doing. They were trying to tear apart my DD team with no concern for the other girls. Stay away during the season is my opinion.

Coop24, great point on 2 sides and maybe there is a reason why someone seeks out other coaches. Also glad to see I am not the only one who thinks it is wrong to recruit duing the season

Is their a unwritten rule when it comes to Hitting and Pitching coaches recruiting kids for certain Teams or should they stay partial?? Or if they start an organization? How do I let the kids go to him/her if they are now affiliated with an organization?

If they want there business to stay health they will have to stay partial.

You can not stop parents from taking there kids to certain coaches as long as the parents are paying the bill.

As a hitting instructor you have to stay impartial especially if you coach for an org but do instruction independently. Now in saying that. If a parent comes to me and is not happy with their present situation Then its a different story.

Sounds like your DD is a true player! I bet many teams would love to have her. That coach must've been a real jerk. Goodluck next season :yahoo:

I think all talk of try-outs, should be done outside of the season. Coaches should not approach players and players should not approach other teams within the season that they have committed to that team. It's completely unfair to the other 9 or 10 girls that have committed to the team. And teams that are recruitting during the season, shame on you! Do the other players and their families that had worked hard and paid money know that you are trying to replace them? I would never allow my daughter to play for a team that recruitted her during a tourney. Can you say slimy? Play your schedule, advertise your try-outs, and make your roster based on those try-outs. Don't continue to pick and choose the best players you can find during tourneys. Whatever happened to coaching? Anymore I feel it's about shiny uniforms and who tells the best story. I would caution anyone that has been recruited by any of the these coaches that can't form a team based on try-outs. They are always on the look-out for a player that could fill your daughters spot. No sense of commitment to anyone, don't be surprised if they quit on the team mid-season or even mid-tourney, or game.

Winners never quit and quitters never win!

I was at a tournament this weekend, where I witnessed something that I thought was very tacky. While talking to coaches from another team between games, along with one of their players, a coach from another team approached and commented to the player that she should be wearing his uniform next season. That was't the first contact from that team at the same tournament. Is this ethical ? Or am I just "Old School" thinking a team attracts players to tryouts by playing good ball with an organization with a good reputation? Just did'nt think it was right to recruit during play at tournaments; and especially so rudely in front of the players current coach!

I'm with you on that, that is how I feel. I just will not approach a player. I swear I have another local team that approaches my players. Last year they sent one of my players a letter and told her she should be on a winning team (winning highlighted); even though they weren't the STUD team this year they think they are. Not to mention how they chum up to her when they see her at tourneys. The other week...same team; one of the coaches was watching our game, and at this time the park was pretty empty because there was about 6 teams left. At first I thought that he just was (maybe) cheering for us because we were a local team. Go to find out he approached one of my players about next year; I just feel, what a snake.

The original post from playball19 included three players from my wife's team and it happened all weekend.
At one point, a coach sent one of his 18-U players to tell one of our players that he wanted to talk to her, as we were walking with her. I told the player to tell her coach to have tryouts like everyone else and how tacky that was. That same coach approached this player and asked her if she will be wearing their jersey next year and that if she did she wouldn't have to pay anything to play for him.
Another coach approached two other players parents from our team and were trying to convince them to switch teams for next year.
This is only my opinion, but what was said to members of my wife's team, while playing at this tournament was B.S. There was nothing complimentary about this at all. This is back stabbing at it's worst and the coaches that did this must not be able to get high caliber players to tryout in the normal way. If I would do that to their team (which I never would and never have), they would be as mad as I am about it. While I respect the opinions of everyone from our community, I wanted to try to clarify what actually happened last weekend. We have never approached a player while in season and players that are on our teams have joined after a tryout.
My wife is one of the best softball coaches in Ohio and her kids absolutely love her and they are very happy to play for her every year. She coaches her kids with respect, she helps them with life lessons and she pushes them to excel in this sport. Her team gets better every year and they are a great group of girls. I'm not too worried about losing any of them to a slimy coach who tries to lure her players away. Several of them are college prospects and we are preparing them to be seen by college coaches.
