A coach may not be able to steal players , but some are like slick car salesmen . They sell themselves to these kids and parents and I believe telling these parents and players half truths is just as bad as stealing them ! Breaking commitments just because you think the grass is greener is just wrong ! If there is a major issue with a team , then I can understand breaking a commitment .

Five years ago at a big college showcase I had a parent from another Ohio team pull the profiles of two of our pitchers.

Said parent, called my parents to see if they wanted to change teams.
Bla, Bla, Bla, about how solid their team was and the big showcases they still had to play. They gave the sob story how they had two pitchers injured and needed players to complete the season. She said they were playing (and I admit) it was a very strong showcase schedule.

Both parents told the parent calling thanks, but no thanks.
I addressed the coach from the team in question before we beat them on Sunday. Naturally; he had "no idea" that one of his parents was doing this. I would say they did the same thing a few times that year....
It happens, teams need to do what they do; if a player jumps ship after a committment because they think the grass is greener most of the time it does not end as they had thought...

When I have been looking for guest players in the past, I always want their current team to know that they are playing for me this or that weekend. Most times, I myself contact the coach to see that it is OK. I contacted 1 parent late last summer as try-out information was being posted, about their plans for the next year, and that I would love to see their daughter at try-outs but was clear that my intentions were for next year. I hear they showed it to the coach (who I know) and he was pissed, but I stand by what I did. I honestly would never contact a player to try to poach them from a current roster. I'm a believer in Karma, and I honestly believe in what comes around goes around. It is the only time I have ever done anything like this. Was I wrong? It seems to be commonplace to do this as a coach, and if you ain't doing it, your falling behind. Man, I hope that's not the case.
