Where is the system of checks and balances in travel softball that is needed to keep unscrupulous adults from coaching kids?
SWO coach handed 5 year civil protection order due to stalking and endangering the health, welfare/safety of a former player. The same SWO coach also plead guilty to related criminal harassment charges against same player and sentenced to probation. This coach is still coaching!

Someone asked this question previous and many stated that it should be the org that pays and institutes these safeguards. Not sure how many actually do though.

Said coach is the president of the organization that he coaches in, and as president interprets findings of background checks.

Our organization requires us to get an annual background check for every coach in the dugout. Drug charges, domestic violence, harassment, theft, or any felony eliminates that person from coaching an IMPACT team. There is no place in youth sports coaching for someone with a record in our humble opinion.

All of our coaches get background checks and have to take the ACE course yearly as well!

that is sick and in these days still unbelievable. I'd also question the parents that allow their children to be exposed to this type of person. Very disturbing but some may be blind to the issue and simply falling in-line. One would think that all should have the background checks in place but we do have pockets of living in a vacuum. This is one benefit of the ASA ACE testing... I know, you can get it cheaper elsewhere. I hope all begin to push for this and it should be required by parents!!!

Anyway, putting this out there may help programs that are not doing it.

Don't coaches have to show their ACE at ASA tournaments in order to be there? I did a background check and I make all my assistants get one as well.
I'm not familiar with NSA or other tournament bodies and their regs. If he has gone through this, isn't he suppose to be registerred and not allowed within so many feel of children. Check him the a registery and if he is in violation then call the authorities.

Are we arguing about getting a $15-20 dollar backround check done on a person?

You are joking right?

Additionally, just go ASA and it is part of the process. This seems a no brainer.

Hmmm. I wonder if accusations happened in year X and now X plus Y years that either the current parents have no idea or that the ones who stayed with said coach dont believe the accusations? Sounds crazy either way you look at it. The only org that required a background check that i was involved in was SAY soccer. The ASA comment, i wasnt aware of that policy.

Totally agree with HITTER23, anything issues (proven) having to do with under age children, that person needs to be identified, so all persons involved with that coach will know what they were up to in the past. There are NO excuses to have someone with a background like that near children.

If there is indeed a civil protection order in place that is a matter of public record.

I have heard of a similar situation, a travel ball bench coach, was told that this convicted Tier III child sex offender was allowed to be around children as long as there is another adult present (that's just crazy).

Hitter23 you're not alone in wanting to know who this is.. many asked and many pms. Seems most here are interested in Liberty and justice fro the players and want to Blazers the identity of the offender.

The easiest way to provide proof is to go to that county's clerk of courts site and search that person's name. If the CPO is true, it will be listed. Screen shot it, then post it. If you can't provide proof, then I think it's better that you don't point fingers at an entire organization.

PA Recently adopted a new law regarding background checks. I posted an outline of the new law on another thread.

http://www.thesoftballzone.com/showthread.php?7103-Background-Checks

The law reads that anyone 14 and above that has virtually anything to do with youth will need to have the PA Background check, the PA Sexual Predator check and (in most cases) The FBI fingerprint check once every three years. The costs will be about $75 and the fingerprint check can not be done on line. There is no language that recognizes reciprocity to other states. The law is unclear if my mother can watch my kids without the background checks.....

We are concerned that, although this law written with the best of intentions, it will only succeed in driving off our volunteers and leave a tremendous void in all youth programs throughout the state. The law is on the books now and portions come into effect 7/1/15 and fully by the end of 2015.
