Runner on 3rd, no outs.
Batter hits a screamer to right center gap for a double.
Plate ump calls runner out on 3rd for leaving early.
Has batter return to plate to bat again now with 1 strike on her.

He also called it a dead ball.

I have no problem with the runner being called out for leaving early, but he also penalized the batter, took away her double, plus put a strike on her.

This shouldn't be a dead ball infraction should it. If it is then the batter should not have had a strike on her.
Shouldn't it have been baserunner out, but the batter runner should have kept her base.
Am I right or just crazy.:confused:

Thanks

He is ccorrect for killing the play, but shouldn't have rung up a strike on the batter.

Anytime a runner is called for leaving early, it's an immediate dead ball.

My only other thought is if its an NCAA game, why would the plate umpire be calling a girl out for leaving early. Should have been at least 2 officials if not 3.

At all levels except NCAA, a runner leaving base before the pitch is released is an immediate dead ball. The runner is out, all subsequent action on the play is cancelled and the pitch is ruled as a "no pitch".

NCAA instituted a new rule last year. Leaving early before the pitch is a now delayed dead ball. At the end of the play the defensive coach has the option of either taking the results of the play or the leaving early penalty (same penalty as noted above).

On this play, it's not too hard to guess which option the coach is going to pick. Enforce the leaving early- runner is out and batter returns to the plate.

There is no rule justification that I'm aware of to add a strike to the batter's count. She should have been returned to the plate with the same count she had before the leaving early infraction.

Those types of mistakes just eat me alive. Not the ump's mistake, but leaving early from third with no outs and no squeeze play on. Playing aggressive is one thing, but it's harmful if we also don't play smart.

Ump 5761 has a good point concerning the home plate umpire (but I believe it is his(her) responsibility to make the call after conferring with the defensive team's coach) even though the base umpire had the original call. I am just disappointed that apparently none of the umpires at the game, nor ump 5761, know the rule. Saw a similar play (base runner at 1B, not 3B) in a game when EKU was at Belmont last weekend. It was handled correctly by the umps, but not all the fans were happy.

Our last game in D3, we had a runner called out 2 times for leaving early twice and this situation came up. We will probably have it come up again today.
