florisda isn't really impressing me that much. they haven't manufactured anything, only scoring on homeruns. nelson is pitching decent but didn't have the defense the last two games. they were lucky to have beaten bama sunday. i would haVe liked to see a bama washington final.

Are we going to start seeing our girls try and wear their helmets backwards while yelling all those goofy cheers? Gonna be tough with the face masks but I bet they try. :lmao:

Not pulling for Florida or the SEC, but that ump last night was giving the pitcher 3-5 inches, sometimes more, off the corner all night long. I have watched games before that she has done and it was the same thing. She is consistent. But it does make it awfully difficult on hitters when the ump is calling pitches that are almost unhittable a strike. If the batter tries to adjust, then the pitch will bust her inside and make the hitter look silly.
I have a problem with the inconsistency from one ump to the next. Last nights ump had a wide strike zone, but several games this weekend, the ump made the pitcher put it on a tee. Look at some of the high scoring games and all the HR's. I know they are great hitters, but if the pitcher has to groove it, it makes it easier to hit. The strike zone isn't supposed to be a moving target. It shouldn't be so difficult to acheive some consistency from one ump to the next.

Did anyone agree with Kruks comments that the runner going to second should not look to third for coaches signals but should rather know the outfielders arm and their own speed and make up their own mind if they should hold 2nd or go to third ?

I was surprised by that too. Do they know these players that well to know arm strength? I would think maybe and maybe not or some but not all.

for the most part Kruk has played his role perfectly. Added color commentary without making a fool out of himself. anyone think he understands the womens game well ?

AGE ALERT !! Lawrie's follow through or finish of her pitch reminds me of "The Big Fig Newton" LOL. My knee is aching just watching her. I've watched as much as I can, but I haven't really seen her have to field anything quick back at her.

i think players with good speed and knowledgeable about the game could make that call on whether to advance or not to 3rd. i would also consider age.
liked Kruk's comment about the dumber you are at the plate; the better you are. i think of patrick from spongebob.

That's what we tell our players, even at the young levels. No way the base coach can make the decision and communicate it faster than the player can see it. At the younger age, their decision is usually backed up by the coach confirming, but we've had instances where a base could have been taken and the coach didn't make the call. Our message to that runner is she has to learn to make the decision on her own. We'd rather miss some bases now or gets some runners thrown out on bad decisions than have them believe that all they have to do is follow their base coaches' instructions.

No to get away from the World series here, but I have to disagree with you here on some instances. One in particular a ball to right field., or even a ball over center field.. I do not want my runner looking to her right and trying to run around second at the same time and decide to go to 3rd or not?? Just run your *** off be looking at me 5 steps before you get to 2nd and I will tell you to get here or not. I will bet it all , That will get a runner to 3rd fatser than her looking over her shoulder and deciding to go or not every time. I actually had this exact scenario happen this past weekend.. player looked at me before second, never looked at the ball in right field got the motion to 3rd and was there without a hitch!! It was very nice to see a player do as they were taught and execute!! She was also reminded of that execution later for positive reinforcement!!

Yes, the situation you describe with the RF play is the strongest one for requiring the runner to look at the third base coach but we still like our players to "sneak a peak" at plays in RF and make her own decision, which can be called off by the 3B coach. At CF I feel even more strongly, as the play is usually in front of her.

In part it's a philosophical difference, as I agree with you that you may win some games that you otherwise would have lost if you didn't have the "3B coach makes the call and you shouldn't be getting your own information as to how the play is developing." Much as I HATE to lose, we try to focus on where we want our players to be when they are 16 and up and sometimes that means losses in the here and now.

I am going to miss not having games on every night! I thought the biggest play of the game was the Florida runner on 2nd slowing down to avoid contact with the SS on the hit to center. The run would have tied the game. Had she not slowed down or if she would have bumped the SS she would have scored.
The reason I wanted to post this is we find several coaches positioning players to cause runners to break stride or avoid. We teach our girls to bump, but never to slow down or change directions to avoid contact.
Umpires at our level (12U) seem to rarely call obstruction, which is frustrating.
Any ideas on ways to handle this?

Congrats to U Dub, and to Danielle Lawrie as well. I loved the look in her eyes in the 5th and 6th innings when she was just locking everything down, and just took over the Gator batters. That made Enis(sp?) double and near homer all the more remarkable in the 7th. Lawrie just has to be the toughest player in the continent.

Also, I'm going to miss not having softball on everynight as well. Back to scouring STO for Racers games and HS state playoff games.
