My daughter was catching on Monday, and a ball glanced off the bat, narrowly missed her mitt, and squarely hit her helmet. It didn't seem very serious at the time. She just shook it off and continued playing a good game. The line drive to the opponent's pitcher and the bad hop to our short stop's nose seemed much worse.
The coach checked her for signs and symptoms of a concussion, but she seemed fine. I kept an eye on her for the rest of the evening and she still seemed OK. Tuesday afternoon, I got a call from the trainer at school. Signs and symptoms that weren't apparent in the morning showed up later that afternoon. A trip to the physician confirmed that she has a mild concussion.
High School coaches and some summer coaches are trained to recognize concussions, but parents also need to be aware of the signs and symptoms because they can appear long after the game has ended.
