Crazy coach or crazy umpire?

Next time look for backup. Your assistant should've taken the fall. All good assistants have the coaches back. I guess he was to busy trying to steal your bucket. You should've called me. I've always had your back as you know and I would've loved to record it. Just so the boss man and I could have some laughs, not for blackmail or anything. ;& Thought I was the "Bad Coach".:lmao:

Thanks James...you are in my speed dial.

To the earlier comment, I agree that there are many more good experiences with the umpires than bad. I apologize for harping on the negative and not accentuating the positive.

Game on!

We had an official who was very nice with younger age groups on "rules clinics". If it was Sunday where there was downtime and they were waiting on a team to come over to play, he would quiz them in the dugout on various rules. I used to tease him and tell him he was "holding court" as sometimes the coaches would miss the tougher ones. :)

Just wanted to thank all the umpires that take time to help us teach these young kids the rules. I have had many more good umpires than bad but the ones that I treasure are the ones that help me teach by taking a monument to explain one of the myriad rules that govern this game to our very inexperienced players.

They definitely help make my coaching job a lot less like work.

Was one of his questions "why is the baseline between 1st and 2nd longer than the baseline between 2nd and 3rd?"

He would ask the obvious ones like what happens if the ball is back in the circle and you stop in between the bases without committing to going back, or what happens if you square up to bunt and leave it there regardless of pitch location. The squaring one would get some coaches also as this was right when NSA changed the rule on offering during a bunt attempt. He tried to keep it simple and would work in a tougher one every once in awhile. It kept the girls interactive in the game during downtime and the coaches were fine with it as it kept them distracted on a good topic while waiting.

Since when did umpires get such thin skin? I really respect the job that they do, I really do cause I could not do it, but more and more I hear stories about how umpires talk back to the fans and get upset over every little comment made. I can remember back in the early 90's sitting in the stands watching my sister play ball and if the umpire called a pitch that we thought should have been a strike, we'd say things like "good pitch" or "looked good to me blue". The result it was still a ball and the umpire ignored us. Just a few weeks ago this same thing happened at a game and a parent said something very similar and the umpire stopped the game and asked "who said that?" and would not start the game again until the fan admitted to saying it. He then threw the fan out! I was shocked, now if the fan had been riding him the whole game then maybe, but this guy said 1 thing. I am sure this is not the norm, but it just seems to me that umpires are more "sensitive" now a days and want to show who is the boss of the game.

I have to totally disagree with backstop. The coach in question did nothing wrong at all in my opinion. A coach has every right to talk to and question an umpire as long as it isnt done in a rude or inconsiderate way. Sounds like the umpire had a thorn in his a** from the time her got to the field. late.

Let's switch gears...do you think it's ok for a catcher to ask (respectfully) the ump behind the plate where the pitcher is "missing" on her pitches?

As we have all experienced, there can be some big inconsistencies from one game to the next (sometimes even with the same ump). Is it ok to simply ask the question, say nothing, or let the coach ask the question?

I encourage my catchers to talk to the umpires. Be very respectful and just ask "where do we need to be sir". Most umpires will gladly chat a little, after all we are in this for the kids anyway.

As an umpire, I for one enjoy a "chatty" catcher. As stated above, as long as she is respectful (which most are)....And I will be the 1st to admit to her where I think the pitch is, was or needs to be....And will even tell her, "Missed that one didn't I"...Because sometimes it happens that we do miss a ball or strike...No matter how focused we are....
But to me, I love every minute of calling each & every ball game & it makes it even better when we have a very good spirited catcher who is loving the game right along with us....

Absolutely no one cares if you win those games. No one. So why waste your time arguing with an awful umpire? Just teach the kids how to play-- if you can. Most "coaches" can't. That's the problem.

Completely disagree with backstop and skillsvideo. There is a proper way to question a call, and at times you should question a bad call. I always ask them what they saw mad they are usually more than willing to explain it for you. If I saw it differently I let them know in a normal tone. What are you teaching them if you don't go ask about something which is obviously wrong. At an 8u tourney a few years ago we had a play where a thrown ball had hit a runner and my parents were very vocal towards the umpire. I called time and went out to tell him he made the right call and to just talk with me for a minute so my parents would think I was arguing the call and would leave him alone. He got a good laugh and my parents were ok at that point.

skills video...if no one cares who wins...why play?
