Had an umpire during the world series call "dead ball" on a pitch that deflected off the opposing teams catcher and hit him in the ankle? Our girl on third scored on the past ball and he made her go back to third? He said he didn't mean to say that? Does this sound right..... he was a good ump, and it had no affect on the outcome of the game. Just curious on such a strange call

He is in play so not a dead ball. What if a pop up behind him and the catcher has to gently move him aside? Would he say it again? Just a gaffe on his part....

I can only surmise that the shock of getting hit in the ankle must of momentarily taken control. Been hit there a couple of times catching the DD's drop and it can make you forget everything else for a minute or two as you try and determine #1 do I still have an ankle, and #2 do I need to regurgitate my last meal?

Had one get drilled out at second base area up in Loudonville two weeks ago and you could tell it hurt. Would probably have gone right through me like a cartoon!

Been there, too. Shin shots hurt for about two months...

The worst part is that you can't show the daughter that you're injured, lest she ease up in fear of wounding her Dad. "Throw hard, kiddo. I'm fine."

Thank god he didn't get hit in the ya-ya= saw it happen two summers ago with my oldest pitching--the only sound was a kind of strange-sounding cat-like whine....All the men cringed, the girls on field were confused, and the moms started laughing...

I'll bet that no one questioned the "Dead Ball" call then ...
