Hitting and Hitters Discussion Does your Hips lead in Hitting

The elvis move is posted in another thread.

Does this hitter do the Elvis move a split second before the upper half moves?
Do you think the hips are leading the upper body in this swing?
Does leading with the hips give you more power?
Do you think the lower body will help pull the upper body around on rotation.

Load your hip / unload it

Do you think the lower half starts first?

Well after reading the previous Part I and II on this... my two cents "for what it is worth" ...is yes... Hands follow hips :D, Get your MASS behind the swing and more power will follow. A few more areas of attention and the swing will be strong.

The overhead shot of Pena is a great learning tool in many respects.

1. It shows that his head is inside of his knees, and his knees are inside of his feet.
2. It shows his front knee moved towards his rear knee during the negative move/load.
3. It shows push off the inside of the ball of the rear foot and that his rear foot is in a neutral position during the start of his positive move.
4. It shows hip rotation before heel plant.
5. It shows that he is keeping his front shoulder closed as he is rotating (opening) his hips. At this point he is attaking the ball with his front shoulder, soon to be followed by the lead elbow.
6. It shows that he is not forcing his rear elbow to slot at this point; it is merely following the turn of the shoulders while staying at the same angle.
7. It shows that the hips do indeed lead the hands.
8. Merely speculation since we do not see the entire swing, but the rear elbow will slot and the hands will start simultaneoulsy with the attacking (pulling) of the lead elbow.

Nice gif. :)

Looks like some kind of Vietnamese land mine....

I saw this on the History Channel and it confused those with the mine sweepers because of the lack of metal used. It was tongue and groove and no nails, some even had glass as shrapnel.

I have one of the Power drives and I am trying to find a way to make it cost less. Nice concept however for teaching eversion.

Yeah, getting that through airport security could be an issue!

And thanks, Hitter, learned a new word today ... eversion! :)

One thing to consider about that gadget. we do not teach the back knee to drive up under the body, you are just asking for a knee issue. Crystal may use it but im betting she uses it in the down position to feel the weight on the inside of the back foot and to aid the transfer of the weight going forward like the wedge we use now. I like the idea though and it does have some good points, im not sure I would trade the wedge we use now for the cost and safety issues of the one being sold.

You're dead on there Tim. As demonstrated on the website video it doesn't work as well for women. I asked Crystl about it and she said it just didn't feel comfortable for her. I suspect it is because of the Q angle of the hip is different for women vs men.

She used it in the down position with the weight on the inside of the back foot, just as you surmised. She really liked the feeling and said she could feel her glutes firing when she did it right.

I was talking to her about it before the clinic started on the second day and we came up with a new drill for it. We placed it in front of the stride foot where the hitter's natural stride was and had the hitter stride onto it. It was like using the concrete filled bucket that Howard has, but it also gave an audible "click/clank" when the hitter stepped on it.

We used the device for both back foot and stride foot drills and I thought it was really effective for getting the hitter to feel eversion.

Wouldn't a simple angled plane such as a wedge work just as well then if the device is being used starting in the down position? If so, then you could save yourself over $190. This device seems too gimicky to me for the price.....man or woman.

I watched her use two of them at the Ice Clinic in Westerville. Really made the young lady she was working with feel inversion.

Personally I think the price point is too high for the average consumer. They seem like they might be targeting schools, organizations, and/or instructors.

It is actually called eversion. :D

I never quite understood why this term is used. I suppose years ago some man or woman writing a book or making a video was trying to sound smarter than they really were and stumbled on the word evert or eversion. To evert means to turn out (or to turn inside-out) but hitters in fact do not turn out of the pitch, they turn into the pitch. The concern of the hitter should be whether or not they get their rear hip through. The rear hip does in fact "turn inward". Scooter7 shows us through a picture of one of the definitions of inversion. To invert does indeed mean to turn upside-down, but it also means to turn inward. Maybe jestinysdad's use of the term inversion is more correct than the others using the term eversion.....
