I wish every one good luck as the 2010 travel ball season is getting under way. I also want to make you aware of the dangers of bed bugs as you travel and stay at hotels. Bed bugs are on the rise all over the US, Cincinnati is one of the hot spots. Bed bugs hide in the cracks in and around the bed, and they are looking for you their next blood meal. How you can protect yourself; take a flashlight with you so that you can inspect around the bed and other parts of the room. Before you leave home put your things in seal type bags like a glad freezer bag. Your clothing can go in air tight bags that compress your clothes. When entering the hotel room place your bags in the middle of the floor, away from the walls or furniture, then inspect around the bed, the headboard, lift the mattress, if you don?t know what a bed bug looks like Google it up, an adult is about the size of apples seed, a brown reddish in color, juveniles are hard to see because they are small and with out a blood meal they can be transparent. Look for blood spots. The headboards a lot of time are hung on the wall; you can push up from the bottom, and then inspect the hanger and the headboard very carefully. Lift the matters check around the corners or tuffs of the mattress. If this area looks clear, check the night stand the pictures hanging on the wall and the rest of the room. I will warn you to be careful putting your hands behind something you can?t see, so you are not hurt in any way. You also may come across items left or lost in the room form a previous tenant, do not be surprised to find adult items left behind. There are pest control products on the market that you can spray on your luggage that can repel the bed bugs, contact a pest professional for their suggestions.
When you return home unpack your luggage in the tub (you can see a bed bug on the white surface, and they can?t crawl up the sides of the tub.) and inspect every thing carefully, dryer heat will kill bed bugs when left in for 15 minutes or more on high. Sorry to hit you with this, but I want you all to have a great summer, and not spread bed bugs to your home. I have been in the pest industry for 28 years, I work for a company that has developed and new bed bug monitor, BDS will be hitting the market very soon, Please take the time to learn about bed bugs, and talk to a pest professional, if you think you have bed bugs in your home now get an inspection now, the sooner you get treatment the easer the task of eradicating them from your home will be.
I will answer any questions you have.

Good Luck to you!

I have not been on this site for a while, so I have not seen any past posts about bed bugs, it is good that bed bugs are talked about.

First, to "bomb" for bed bugs, Total release aerosols are for insects that are IN THE OPEN, this type of insecticide can not penetrate cracks were the bed bug is harboring.
Bed bugs will go between the wall and the carpet, down in the wood work of the box springs of the mattress were they have a short climb up to you.
Second; if you have rentals,
don't think the tenant will do the proper job to get rid of them, this is your property, an female bed bug can lay 5 eggs per day, within days those bed bugs are laying eggs, do the math on how fast you can have a major problem.
Third: to do a proper bed bug extermination job, it takes two or three exterminators several hours and several return visits, they are that hard to get rid of!
Be pro-active and check your room, take steps not to bring them home.
