EJECTED  (  justified  ?  )

Re: EJECTED ?( ?justified ?? ?)

Lightning coach , "If Possible" is the big question here. My runner should not have to slow down at any time until after she reaches the bag. I tell my girls to go 100% until they reach the bag....regardless....everytime. Of course we don't condone blasting a first baseman, that is nuts, but........There is no reason to straddle the whole lanes if all you have to do is tag the base or runner. Remember...."If Possible"....

By rule, a fielder with possession of the ball has every right to stand wherever she wants. There is no rule preventing her from stradling the baseline or blocking the base.

By rule, the runner may not remain on her feet and crash into a fielder.

I admire that you are coaching your girls to play the game hard. You can also teach them how to play within the rules to avoid unnecessary outs, ejections or injuries.

Lightning coach-- There was some doubt as to what was legal. That was the reason I presented the question before this judicial system. Thanks for everyones input.

WAVE 16
As bretman who is an accomplished umpire has said know the rules and play by them. My girls play at top speed all the time also ?by the rules. AND for any parent its not the players fault its the coaching staff if an ejection occurs if ?the coaching staff is teaching without knowledge of the rules.

Hey if a player is going full speed and just trying to play hard and some clown wants to eject her so be it.I would tell her to do the same thing the next time.

So...an umpire enforcing the rules exactly as they are written is...a "clown"?

Playing hard is one thing.

Playing within the rules is another.

Would you rather have your runner injured and ejected, or healthy and still in the game?

What would your opinion be if it was your fielder getting plowed by a runner from the other team? How about if the fielder was your daughter?

If an umpire penalized a runner who crashed into a member of your own team, would that umpire still be "a clown"?

Not all contact on the field is an ejectionable offense. Some contact is minor. Some is incidental. Some is unavoidable. But when the contact reaches a point where the rule book calls for a penalty, I would consider the umpire that correctly enforces the penalty a "good umpire", not "a clown".

Powerfan,
First of all umpires are put in position in nearly every game when they must make a call that they think is the right call. (Judgement Call) Making a call that goes along with printed rules does not classify him as a clown. If anyone believes in going hard I do there are several instructors and coaches in NE Ohio that will attest to that. But.....in a situation like this when you hit a one hopper to first and you begin your motion to first and the first baseman fielded your ball cleanly and is standing in the line your probably going to get swing tagged in the first place. That is if the first baseman is trained correctly! Secondly sometime...you will be on the other end of this and get to see how that feels. All coaches are protective of their players. Fininsh your motion take your tag without trying to knock someones block off and go back to the bench and cheer on the next girl to get a hit! After all as the old saying goes "When you roll a 9....You get a 9!"

we definitely have identified the clown. prior posts have you claiming to be an umpire yet you say what you say. your comments on this subject do not warrant a response. For your sake i hope your daughter is not on the receiving end of the type of play you condone. hard is hard and dirty is dirty figure out where you come in. i have played the pittsburgh power many times and they have never played the type of style you condone.

Sure we want the girls to Play hard. ?But we also want them them to play within the rules and to respect their opponents.

The "clown" is performing his/her job and part of that is ensuring the safety of the players (both teams) according to the rules of the game.

Football is an extremely violent game but there are "safety rules" and when they are not followed the player is subject to a "Personal Foul" penalty and Game Ejection.

The Ohio Wave Organization would NEVER condone blatantly hitting ANY player with the intent to do harm. Now, IF the first baseman is straddling the baseline waiting on a throw and some incidental contact is made because a runner is going hard that is a different story in my book and the runner should NOT be ejected. Like I said earlier, I Have seen Umps call runners Safe just because the first baseman was blocking the bag. Whether those umps were right or not is another story, But with umps making different calls from tourney to tourney it makes one scratch their heads. If a runner drops her shoulder and just flat out lays it on the baseman then for sure the runner should be ejected for the Whole Tournament in my book, but we should not take away any and all contact.

I will agree that there is a BIG difference between "flagrant contact" and "incidental contact".

One will get you ejected from a game, the other won't!

COACH BECKER
Well put and as I have stated the Pittsburgh Power organization has always demonstrated nothing but class in any meetings our organization has had with them.

I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your rational, logical and informative view of the question.
