Saw an ump get drilled by a catcher once. Passed ball she ran back to get the ball and realizing she didn't have a play on runners at a base fired back to the pitcher, only it deflected. It took a few moments to realize that it had actually deflected off the back of the umpires head because he just stood there with a blank look on his face. Then he went down.

He was using one of those facemasks that goes over his hat but has no protection for the back of head. Seeing this makes you understand why some of those guys where a full catcher's mask.

He did end up getting up, drinking some water and taking some Advil. Finished calling the game after a break but I know he was hurting.

Saw a ump get hit in the neck while talking to someone behind the fence at a Jr High tourney in West Chester this year. She was throwing pretty hard too.

Saw an ump call 2 pitches to start an inning without putting on his face mask.

He completely forgot about it, and it took 2 pitches for us to notice and let him know. Coulda been ugly.

My youngest pitches for a 9u local rec league. She throws pretty hard for her age, but lacks control. The other coaches call her Chapman. haha. We brought her in a game last week. I told the ump not to stand around the backstop while she is warming up. He didn't listen and had his back turned. Nailed him right in the hammy. I saw him a couple days later, he was still limping. haha.

Back when I had a team in the I270 league we had an umpire show up late and then told us he forgot his facemask. He then went on to tell us it was no problem he would call the game without one. This was a 12u game and pitchers from both sides hit mid to low 50's. We got one of the girls Rip It masks and told him he had to wear it. And he did. Pretty sure I have a picture of it somewhere.

Saw an ump take a foul ball in the neck. He had on a face mask but no neck gaurd on it. He went down like a ton of bricks. Older gentleman, left in a sqaud. We finished the game with a parent umping.

Saw an ump not wear a cup once. And yes...... he paid for it. Poor guy, at least it was only 10u, but you know most of those girls throw low to mid 60's. Hahahaha. Haha....... sorry couldn't resist. ;&

Was that Ashe pitching when the ump kept lecturing the catcher? If so I think she let it get by on purpose.

Saw ump take 2 shot to the inner thigh in a game, he said both shots were in the same spot. Hope he was wearing the proper protective equipment.

I had an ump in the Thunder Elite Tournament 2 weeks ago, (very good umpire in my mind). Had the face mask only with his hat on and no chest gear. In the 2 games he had us, he took a foul ball off his chest (never flinched) and another off his head (just missed his mask), again, never flinched. This guy was as tough as a Waffle House steak. On a side note, he told us before the game that he lost his hearing and that if we wanted to talk to him we had to get close. I'm thinking this is great, I say whatever I want and he'll never hear me to throw me out.
