Figuring averages & on base percentage

Need help! How do you figure Batting Average?
Where does "Walk" or "error" or "HBP" or "Sac. bunt" or "Sac. Flies" come in to play.

Then how do you figure on base percentage.
Hate to ask but consider me a very new stat keeper- so please write information in normal
lay man terms. That way I won't keep asking so many questions.

Batting average = hits/at bats
At bats = total plate appearances - sacrifice hits - walks - HBP
On base pct. = times on base/(at bats + walks + HBP)
Times on base = hits + walks + HBP (note: excludes times on by error)

I have recently been put in charge of compilling stats. I use AVG,OBP and SLG as the main offensive stats. What are a few more that are important as well.

You get a break on a SACb for OBP but not for SACf. IMU that intent is clear on SACb, but questionable on SACf.

Doom15, RBI is the most important stat.

Everything else is personal achievements - scoring runs lets you play beyond 9:00 AM Sunday.

Snocatzdad ... where do you get that info at re: including sac. flies in at bats? If it's scored a sacrifice, it is not an at bat ... keep in mind that not every time a runner moves up on a fly ball should it be scored as a sacrifice ...

Louuu ... while I understand what you're saying about RBI's, that is mostly a function of where you bat in the lineup and what the batters in front of you did.

4. On base percentage (OB%) = (base on balls + hit by pitch + hits) / (sac. flies + base on balls + hit by pitch + official at bats) or (times on base earned by appearance at plate) % plate apperances (NSCA formula)

What about an ERA calculation.......would it make sense to use 5 innings versus 7 since we never seem to get that far ?

There is no reason a coach can't make up or use whatever stat he or she wants to measure and compare the performance of their players. If a 5 inning ERA helps you think about how many earned runs a pitcher gives up in a typical tournament game, then go for it. Obviously, you don't want to give that info to the girls and have it end up in their profiles if its not based on the accepted calculation. I used to look at total base runners allowed per inning by a pitcher ... something like WHIP though I included OBE's and HPB etc. For hitters, I looked at a modified OBP which also included OBE and HBP.

My concern with the "accepted calculation" is for softball it is based upon 7 innings which we havent gone that far in 2 tournaments which causes the ERA to sky rocket.

I was wondering what people use since 7 isnt the right number unless you always play 7 innings.

Everyone needs to use a common factor ... if you think about it, ERA just means the number of earned runs allowed for every 7 innings pitched. Would you rather have a pitcher who gives us 3 runs every 5 innings (4.20 ERA) or 3 runs every 7 innings (3.00 ERA)? If the pitcher who only pitched 5 innings had pitched 7 innings, chances are she would have given up another run or two.
