I am bringing this up in a public forum because I want to make sure everyone is aware and has an opportunity (or not) to voice their concern - and more importantly if changes can be made they occur before alot of work is put into scheduling.

In the rules packet sent out - it states that games will be played by a '1:20 drop dead timelimit and revert back to previous inning' rule. I think I speak for everyone when I say - that is a terrible way to play games and I have never seen a outdoor tournament play by those rules unless it was weather affected.

I as a coach would rather play be an '1:10 timelimit but say no new inning will start after that time'. I know that with the increase in teams they are concerned about getting behind, as a tournament director (GAPSS) I appreciate that concern and my experience shows that 1:10 no new inning will result in staying on time when games are spaced an 1 hour 30 minutes appart - even with field maintenance.

I am bringing this up because out of the three other coaches playing in the tourney I spoke to - no one had read the rules to see the time limit issue. Please share your thoughts with Joe and the tournament so they will again give serious consideration to making the change.

To help clarify a little more the official rules. The rule stating that "at the end of the time limit the score will revert back to the previous inning in pool play" will only occur during pool play. For all other games at the end of the time limit the complete inning will be finished. If you have any questions about the rules or any other aspect of the tournament please contact Joe Horn at fireintheskysoftball@gmail.com .... 6 WEEKS UNTIL GAME TIME!

This is a GREAT tournement let's not put a sour note on it. I think you should have called Joe and asked him if that was a option and why they do it the way they do. Instead of posting it on here. I would bet it would have something to do with the way the maintain the fields which is secound to none. Also maybe so you you don't fall behind. Just a guess. By the way I have seen other outdoor tournaments do this in pool play not sure it's a big deal. JMHO

I don't see anything wrong with bringing it to everyones attention here. I got the packet but did not read the rule yet because I have other fish to fry at this point. I for one am glad Mike brought this to our attention.

Now about drop dead. I thought we killed this formt years ago. It is an awful way to play games. Way to many shenanagins go on. I too would much rather play 1:10 finish the inning. In almost every game the last inning is utterly meaningless in revert back.

I'm still looking forward to the tournament. We are just offering our two cents based on past experience with the dreaded revert back.

Not saying good or bad, but talk to them first instead of getting abunch of people calling them complaining. Again JMHO

Warren,

I have to agree with Mike and Wave. Having played in this tournament before and being busy chasing my kids around I had not looked over the rules/changes as of yet. But by putting in a revert back rule just so that you can take more teams? No way do I agree with that! Already this year as a TD I've had to turn down teams because we cant accomodate them due to time. You space your games apart and "finish the inning" if time allows, most of the time you will get back on schedule due to quick games, run rules, etc. Like most tournaments you inform the teams to be ready to play so many minutes before game starting time, this should in turn keep you on or close to your planned schedule. This has been a great tourney in years past, I just hate to see it tarnished just to make a few bucks.

I did twice (from a fellow TD perspective and from a participant in the tourney) and was told it was considered and decided against.

However when I brought it up to several other coaches, no one knew about it and everyone said they would prefer to do a 'shorter time limit and no new inning'. As I said, if changes can be made - making them before schedules come out saves everyone time and effort.

Since this post, Joe (TD), responded to me and said that as with any good tournament they want to provide the best experience possible and that based on the feedback they will meet again to see if anything could be changed.

Listen (to more than just the one guy who read the initial rules) and consider suggested changes is all I was asking for. If changes don't/can't happen - so be it.

I hope they get this rule changed, As much as we like this tournament I would have definetly considered going somewhere else if I knew they were going to use a drop dead time limit..

Again to help clarify some of the comments, This rule has always been apart of our pool play for this tournament. We have not changed any of our rules from the past. We have never had an issue with this rule in our long history as a tournament so have never considered changing it or felt the need to change it. Like Mike stated earlier it is our goal to be one of the best tournaments around and if this is an issue and we are able to change it we will. I hope to have this resolved by the time we release pool play and schedules in the first week of June if not sooner.

Fire in the Sky Tournament Teams: Our tournament committee held a meeting with our head umpire to discuss the rules that was brought into question on this forum. After considerable discussion concerning the rule change, we decided that for this year the rules will all remain the same as they have been at our tournament for the previous six year, and that there will be no change to the "drop dead" rule in pool play. We feel that to change the rule this close to the tournament may cause multiple problems with us running a smooth and enjoyable tournament. If you have any questions please contact Joe Horn at fireintheskysoftball@gmail.com
