my daughter has to move up to an 18U team, and we are having such a hard time finding one! She is getting very discouraged, because she has gone to 3 tryouts, and did EXCELLENT, but she doesn't pitch, and these teams told us that they want to save their remaining spots for someone who can pitch as well as play other positions. I spoke with the coaches prior to tryouts, and asked what positions they were looking for, and they were aware that she doesn't pitch, yet they still told her to come tryout for the other positions...only to be rejected ONLY for the fact that she can't pitch. I just wish we had been told that they only wanted pitchers, it would have saved a lot of time, gas, and hurt feelings. she is discouraged to the point that i'm not sure if she will tryout for any more teams, which would be a loss for both her, and a potential team.

I'm sure your daughter will find a good fit and a softball team that looking for more then a pitcher(s).

One thing for sure you show allot of class when you didn't drop team names and coach's names in your post.

Good Luck!

Let me play the role of Devil's Advocate here.

I don't know your daughter, or which teams she tried out for. But...

- Is it possible that you're setting your sights too high? Maybe, even though she has decent skills, other girls at the tryouts have more.
- You say she "did excellent". Is that through Mommy Goggles? How did she really do - compared to others there?
- Does she exhibit any warning signs of being one of those who wouldn't fit? i.e. attitude, high maintenance, doesn't hustle, P.I.A. parents, etc...

Again; I don't know. But a team will find a way, IF the player can play.

Sorry that is happening to her- that sucks!
Did you post something in the players looking for teams section? Hopefully coaches there will only respond if they really need what your daughter can offer.
From what I hear, you shouldn't worry yet. I can understand her being a little defeated and exhausted though. Just remind her of why she is doing it. It would stink to sit out of softball for the summer because she let discouragement get the best of her now. It's a good life lesson too. In the "real world" companies interview for jobs all of the time when they already know they will fill it from the inside: they are just going through the motions. It doesn't feel good then either but you can't let that stop you from continuing to interview and giving your best at those interviews. Good luck!

At 18u, many teams have to expand out their rosters some because of players getting busy...jobs, you name it, kids approaching graduation are very busy nowadays.

Definitely post on "Players searching", and let them know your wants - ie position and locations...and pretty sure someone will come a knocking!

I like this thread...was just told recently that my dd (a '99) was essentially too good to play for a particular team and that the coach couldn't fulfill her playing needs...Blah! Blah! Blah! Whenever I saw who made it, I was thinking that maybe he was right. Talking about trying to build a team...no wonder the major players went to another organization!

Thanks for your encouragement everyone! She has some private tryouts scheduled now, and they are aware of what positions she plays, and that's what they are looking for :) she has been playing since she was 4, and every coach she has ever had has told us what a good attitude she has, and how she gives it her all, so her attitude isn't the problem. I wish the teams she tried out for all the best, they were great organizations, just needed pitchers ( she had a torn rotator cuff, and labrum, so that's why pitching is out) she adores softball, so we are just praying everything works out :)
