What age groups, Time of Year and # of field do you need for Rec State Tourney?

We may be interested.

I just want to extend my personal thanks to Tim for inviting me down to Chillicothe to work some games today. The weather was great, the fields were nice and the teams were enthusiastic. You can't ask for a better combination for a fun day of softball!

We also were in Chillicothe this weekend. Great tournament.

Bretman, we have a question reguarding a call today in our game.

What is the correct call when the batter bunted, and ran in fair territory all the way thru
1st base. I believe that the catcher threw around the runner, causing the runner to be safe at 1st. What has to happen for the runner to be called out in this situation.
Our umpire gave his ruling, was wondering if yours would match.
Thanks

Gee...I hope that play wasn't from one of my games...There was one close play at first base like that, but nobody really said anything to me about it when I called the runner safe.

Here is the rule from the NAFA rule book:

Rule 11-3-H: The Batter-Runner is Out...When either of their feet is completely outside the runner's lane, in contact with the ground, and, in the judgment of the umpire, they interfered with the fielder taking the throw at first base. Exception: They may run outside the runner's lane to avoid a fielder, attempting to field a batted ball and/or to touch the base on the last stride.

EFFECT: The ball is dead. Each runner must return to the last base legally
touched at the time of the interference.

What has to happen for the runner to be called out? She has to be either hit by the throw or else collide with the fielder taking the throw in such a way that her actions prevented an out.

If the runner was out of the three-foot running lane and the catcher made a throw that had no reasonable chance of retiring runner-like a throw way over the first baseman's head- that is not interference.

Would my call match the call in your game? Hard to tell without actually seeing the play. Note that the rule states it is "umpire judgment" whether or not the fielder was prevented from catching the throw. That judgment is based on seeing all of the elements of the play- the position of the runner, the position of the fielder and the quality of the throw.

Well...I didn't see any of that! But at least you now have the actual rule and some idea of what has to happen for the runner to be called out. Just running in fair ground, out of the running lane, in itself is not a violation. The runner has to be out of the running lane AND interfere with the fielder taking the throw.

The time of year for Rec or "C" tournament is July. That way their league tournament is done. Amount of fields.. well it depends on how strong we get out there and grab the rec teams. I have a list of city rec depts, etc... that usually give you the person in charge of the rec leagues. Those are the girls I want.

Great Tournament !!!! Enough time to play real 7 inning games and everything ran on time. Concession food wasn't quite up to the standard of Rotary Park's, but was still very good. DD's team had a great time and would go back again in a heartbeat.

Sure had enough time to play the whole game at this tournament. Very re***ed. We finally had a weekend to play ball without rain this year. A little cold in the morning, but by afternoon it was sunny and nice. Thanks again Tim.

LOL,

I took two jackets with me... a heavier weight and a lighweight... by midday, I was in my coaching shirt. It was a great venue. It reminded me of the parks I visited during my youth. I would love to go back again.

I just asked the Ross County people (Lissa) to line us up again for a tournament there. It's a tough place to get a weekend date. She said she is working on it.

I think they found a director and I passed that info to them. Haven't come up and said who their director is yet. But, I know I got West Virginia now as well as Ohio.
