Tonight, one of our H.S. pitchers was told she could not wear her Gameface because it didn't "Look" or "Feel" safe. Anyone else had this trouble?
?I talked to the umps after the game and was told that they would not be allowed in H.S. ball ???

In our game tonight the other teams pitcher wore a game face. A purple one to match her uniform. Not one comment from the umpires about it not being allowed.

That is what I tried to tell the ump after the game but he said it was "his" call if he thought it was safe or not. My blood pressure is just now getting back to normal.

The pitcher has worn it all season so far and not one complaint until tonight.

Have your A.D. lodge a complaint and at least request that particular ump not officiate your teams games the rest of the season. If he doesn't know the rules or is arrogant enough that he won't even try to quote where in the rules he can do this then I wouldn't want him at my games.

:-?You would think that the clear ones would have better visibilty than the colored ones. If the gamefaces get scratched up, does that effect the wearer's visibility? Those emasks for batting helmets seem to have that problem---as soon as they get scratched up, you can't see out of them :'(

the game face is more like the batting helmet grill and can take all the abuse that you would want to give them.

Seems to be it was covered under an optional equipment rule somewhere, I'll have to see if I can find it.

A little Hannibal Lechter-ish, though . Just bought my daughter one--she says she won't need to get a Halloween costume this year. :D But she's good about wearing it

Wow!!! Game Face not safe for a pitcher. Was this guy an actual umpire or did the opposing coach persuade the Pepsi delivery guy to umpire after the real ump was a no-show?

I'm with you Wave10u. Both umps were kinda ignorant to the whole game in general but not being allowed to wear the gameface because it was "unsafe" really got me thinking about their credentials.

Approved by NSA, ASA, ISA AND NFHS.

Rule 3.
Section 5.
D. FACE MASK/GUARDS.
Any defensive player or offensive player can wear an approved face mask/guard.
EXCEPTION: Fast pitch catchers cannot wear the plastic face mask/guard. Face masks/guards that are cracked or deformed, or if padding has deteriorated or is missing, are prohibited from use. Approved are the Game Face and Sports-Guard face masks.

This sounds like a totally isolated incident so I would suggest the A.D. quote the rule book as Bear did and get a memo to the person in charge of that areas umpire assoc. so he can put out a directive to all his umpires informing them of the rule.
I have to say though, talk about being aaleep at the wheel, I think my blood pressure would have been through the roof also.

That is perfect advice. And it is also good advice to follow if you have any other issues with your officials in any other games.

The Gameface is a fairly new piece of equipment and possibly that umpire had never seen one before. But that's why we are supposed to attend pre-season clinics and keep up-to-date on rule changes.

Man, I would hate to be the umpire that made a pitcher remove a legal, approved piece of safety equipment, then have that pitcher get hit in the face during the game! :(

WOW - I've heard horror story after horror story of girls taking shots off of the face or head and then deciding to wear the protective equipment. The game face is really not all that new to fastpitch. If you have been around fastpitch softball for even a couple of weeks, you know about the game face. My daughter is relatively new to pitching - I would not let her pitch without it! She recently took a shot directly off of the top right corner - had a bruise and bump and was wearing her game face - WE DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!

Thank goodness we are not hearing about the pitcher taking a line drive after being told she had to remove it! ::)

both the umpire and the coach are idiots. I hope you see them again and share this rule.
